More yarn/cloth types!
This has been suggested before I think but hasn't gotten the appropriate attention.
Currently there are only four types of yarn: cotton, silk, hemp and wool, and only three types of cloth. Cotton is fancy, silk is clingy and hemp is rough.
There could be one more, flax, which grows on the cooler regions that couldn't grow cotton. But I don't know much about it so I'll concentrate on the things we already have in game. Because even with the old materials, there should be several options.
The current cotton yarn is apparently quite thin. So it would be called fine cotton yarn. Then there would be strong cotton yarn which spinning takes more material but is faster to weave because you don't have to worry about breaking it if you tug too much. Fine cotton yarn is used for fancy clothing, especially for tops and underwear, strong cotton yarn is especially for pants, coats and worker clothing.
Current silk yarn is also apparently quite thin. I'm not so sure. Probably the clothes are still not see-through though they're clingy. So there could be very fine silk yarn used for scarves and sexy harem clothing, normal silk yarn for shirts, dresses and fine coats and rough silk yarn (yes, there is such thing) for more durable dresses and pants and jackets. The last option would take more cocoons but be faster to weave for a reason said in the previous paragraph. Fine silk yarn would be very slow to make and use so it would turn out to be pricey for the sheer work it takes.
The current hemp yarn is rough. Good for cheap worker clothing but looks ugly. That's why we need fine hemp yarn. For better clothing that are strong but still good looking and light.
The last one, wool yarn. Current wool yarn is thick and meant for knitting. But there should also be thin wool yarn that's used for weaving cloth! yes, good wool cloth for jackets and pants and vests and skirts and whatnot.

I had earlier suggested in the Clothing thread that one should have speciality looms (with a double take-up spool) capable of producing velvet and brocade from silk yarn and corduroy or maybe tweed from cotton yarn. You could then have brocade dresses enhanced with glass beads, velvet dresses with trains, corduroy trousers, tweed jackets, and suchlike.
One should also have a grinding machine capable of producing polished tortoiseshell, polished stone beads and so forth. Tortoiseshell is undervalued in the game and the clothing suggestions for it are a bit pathetic and rather negatively described.

Hemp is hemp, I'm afraid. It's like canvas. Hemp should have been a material used for making sails for ships, which are otherwise boring to make, but now unfortunately it's restricted to only one continent.
The New Lands and Resources departments made many many errors in how they set up the various lands and their resources, sorry to say, and now it's very very difficult to fix without resetting the whole game. When it comes to balance, the game is now swamped in stockpiles of meaningless resources. On one continent at least, hemp is one of them.

And I believe there is at least one island out there besides the continent you speak of that has hemp growing on it. I won't be any more specific though, and There are not alot of people living on such islands right now. But yes, finer versions of materials that we already possess made with a different machine would be interesting, and a nice change to allow people of different wealths to make superior/inferior clothing then is otherwise availiable. Well we are on the subject, how about being able to make synthetic fibers with a long involved process from oil? I think that oil is not worth enough seeing as it is only good for one thing (that I know of at least), and it takes so long to collect. And seeing as there is an expensive machine that I believe improves the rate of collecting oil, it would seem like more uses for oil should be created

Hemp doesn't actually need to be rough at all. I don't know why it's described that way in the game, except perhaps because most hemp clothes in America in RL are very rough. This is pure marketing, though, and has nothing to do with how coarse or fine hemp can be spun and woven, but rather to do with the perception of hemp as a "primitive" material.

From a cloth making aspect , Flax is really the same as Hemp. They are totally different species of plant but have such similar properties in terms of their fibres and consequently, they are interchangable is use .
Yes Hemp (and flax) can be used to make sails and ropes and other coarse materials but it is also used to make Linen as well.

Are you sure? ARE YOU SURE? If you are sure, you're very mistaken. Bwah hahahahaha. And that's mistaken for... both points made. Hint, hint.

flax, not flux.
Flux means change.
As far as I have been able to tell, hemp has pretty good distribution around the world. There are alternative methods to make rope, as well, even if they aren't as efficient.
I'll let Seko comment on the linens and things.
