Is spelling and grammer such a crime..

Postby MakeBeliever » Thu May 19, 2005 11:08 am

:( I have been reading a lot about bad grammer and spellings while scanning the pages here..
Personally when i see bad spelling in game i like to think of it as a kind of society accent from my chars point of view...
As in most societys you get people who can spell and some that try, I have had fun RPing with people who do both and i think as long as you understand what someone's saying it shouln't be a problem..

If your going to start moaning about grammer about people at least trying to RP then it could put people off saying anything at all.

I'm just fed up with all the thieves about who dont interact with anyone and just spawn and run...

and i ain't goner wory bout mi spellings either  (Joke, before you rip my head off)

I say lead by example and us learners will soon get our English Grammer Together.....

I don't care about the occasional typo, but it does irritate me when I have to re-read and think about what someone's written to try to make sense of it. Decent grammar, spelling and punctuation help a lot with making your point clear and understandable.

In game it can be that someone has a particularly odd mode of speech, in which case, fine, that's their character and mine will act confused if they don't make any sense. On the forums, people don't have that excuse and should at least try to write in reasonable english.

If people are going to get touchy about spelling and grammer, I'm off, because I'm dislexic and although many people don't realise it complaining about someones spelling is not nice when when theres litle you can do about it.

I don't mind when people make errors in spelling and grammar. I mean, I probably make them all the time myself! I only find it annoying, and sometimes even VERY annoying, when people refuse to use punctuation. Is it to much to ask for people to start their sentences with a capital and end them with a dot? Ofcourse this isn't much of a problem when there is only one sentence to read, but when someone is holding a whole monologue it gets VERY annoying.

Oh, and I also find it annoying when people try to imitate Scottish or Irish accents or, even worse, use Ali G language. I often don't understand what they are saying, but I assume that's my problem.

Anyway, in conclusion, I don't mind spelling and grammar mistakes, but I am annoyed when people refuse to use any punctuation.

Cookie monster, from that post and what I've seen elsewhere, you make an effort. For me, that counts for a lot. Also, your english is good enough that it's easily understood, and I'd not noticed it being a problem. It's the "how r u im gud" type stuff that really irritates. Thankfully there's not many posts that bad around Cantr or its forums.

I'm speaking about discussion outside of Cantr first. I'm disappointed when people don't bother to use correct capitalization or keep shortening words, like u, plz... lol and brb such are so common that they would seem weird written in their full forms so that's ok, but ur seems to be the beacon of a lazy, illiterate generation.

Back in the nineties I think it was, I used to read these books about Net Detectives and in the first book they were teaching a newbie how they shouldn't be writing all caps lock on because that's shouting, and teaching all nice sides of netiquette. Where have all those lessons gone?

If you would take typing lessons for just one year, you'd have no trouble writing fast and correct even without using abbriviations and with using capitalization and punctuation. The latter ones are invented to make the text more easy to read. And this is my personal opinion but writing lowercase makes you seem more stupid than you are, maybe because 99% of troublemakers and stalkers are writing that way. Bad writing should only be used for paroding the stereotypes.

We learn on the first class that there are two sorts of letters, big and small. Right? Now using them both is showing respect to the one reading it. Because using just lowercase or uppercase is like telling the reader that he or she is two dumb to handle them both, a mental preschooler. Either that or the writer is. You don't want to be a preschooler, right? Three hours of practicing every week and in a few months you can use all of your fingers instead of just one. Makes you a whizz in games that require fast typing, like Yahoo Graffiti.

Then to Cantr. Later on I've seen a wave of newspawns who write all lowercase and usually oneliners, of course without punctuation. That makes me think there must be some 12-year-old behind the scene and I don't feel tempted to interract with them. Some of them can rp, and if someone is rp'ing well then I stop minding if they're making a bunch of typos and being lazy with the shift key. But I gotta say if I see someone writing correctly, they're more likely to give a positive impression. Like they were the pretty people in Cantr. I'm treating lowercase talking in Cantr as mumbling or twittering. It sounds funny. And if someone starts with correct writing but switches on to lazy writing, that usually kills the impression I've gotten of them. I've never refused to interract with someone just because they can't write correctly, but I'm often rather uninspired to communicate with them.

I learned it much more quickly. My mother just painted an image showing which fingers are supposed to touch which keys, I sticked it just under my screen and tried to use that finger setting as often as possible, until it became natural. I didn't dedicate any amount of time to it, just used it whenever I wasn't in a hurry to type something up. I think it was by the second week that I could type more quickly using that system than with one finger and since then I only increased my speed and began to type without looking.

typing of the dead

can be got from underdogs.org - it;s briliant for speed-typing!

As for punctuation and grammar. I don't have a problem aslong as it's legible...

My dad rewarded me if I could learn to type at a certain speed... it started at like 15, and I worked my way up.

In some Canadian schools (obviously including one of the ones I went to, or it would be unlikely for me to know this), students are required to learn how to type fairly fast (I forget the actual WPM), starting in grade 3. Yes, grade 3. Not the third grade. Dang Americans...
