Building and Vehicle ages

Postby formerly known as hf » Sun May 08, 2005 6:24 pm

Ok, so you can see 'a man/woman in his/her thirties' - how about an extra description next to buildings and vehicles that indicates (roughly) how old it is?

i.e: (stone building - recently built), (stone hall - ove thirty years old), (mud hut - over a hundred years old), (bike - new), (longboat - over fifty years old) etc. etc...

If there's tool degredation, should there not be some kind of indication of how old vehicles/buildings are? I know vehicle and building degradation may be some way in the distance, but this'd be a nice inbetween...

Cantrians have been using the same style of architecture for a long time, so it would be hard to tell the age. :D

That would be cool to add some historical flavor to the game. Building ages would give us historical distiicts and the like. I can't wait for building deterioration, so we can start to have Old town and New town areas.

On the subject of Building Deterioration: What's the point really? Buildings last a long time unless they are demolished. Well built buildings can last for hundreds of years... and currently we haven't yet had 60 game years. Although, I do suppose it would create more use for stone buildings over wood over mud...

On the subject of Building Ages: Yes! I'd love that, I really want some kind of way to differentiate between buildings... for instance Kwor Cathedral really should be different from the many mud huts in Lake Village...

I personally wouldn't mind if half the buildings - the unused ones - anywhere in the game were to collapse. Quill and Lake Vilalge especially.

Yeah. LV is mostly mud huts. Those aren't exactly expected to hold up as well as the Tower of London. I would be surprised to see a mud hit hold up for six years without maintainance, much less sixty. There is a stone shack sitting on my grandparents' farm that is probably about fifty years old. It has a wall falling in on one side, and definitely could not be confused with a brick house that was thrown up a year ago.

Yes, but there are also houses that have been around for a few hundred years and are still in good shape. A big part of the lifespan of a building depends on upkeep. You don't run off and put up a new one as soon as the first starts showing it's age; you repair it. (And if you do build a new one, think about how cluttered the page would be then...)

Though it's worth mentioning that in real life, if a building gets to the points where repairs aren't a viable option, it's condemned and demolished. :)

Anyway, back on topic (cause it started talkin' about deterioration), yes, let's start labelling the age of buildings automatically, so now we see 'under 10 years' then 'over 10 years', and then 'over 20 years' etc.
