Inappropriate Rape?

Postby Lumin » Mon May 02, 2005 5:37 pm

(Apologies for the title. :) I wanted to tie it in with the 'Inappropriate Sex' topic from earlier, though I do admit this one sounds weird...)

Anyway, just curious how many people have noticed the rash of poorly-written rapes or sex in general in Cantr lately. I saw some really pathetic sex on the road the other day, someone in Support made a thread about a rape attempt, and Seko mentioned several similar characters, so it seems like it's not just an isolated incident.

The thread in Support asked if the player could be banned, and I'm curious on seeing people's opinions on that.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with rape, (In the context of Cantr, obviously...) and it should mainly be dealt with in an IC manner, but in these cases it's been so poorly RPed and ridiculous that somebody really ought to talk to this guy, especially if it's found to be the same player.

Actually, if this is the same player than I think it could constitute a CR breach since they're playing the same character over and over, so maybe banning is appropriate after all.

Thoughts?

I've seen it happen before...generally since the other player gives the person being 'raped' no chance to RP their end it's no different from

*Jim kicks Jerry in the back of the knee, forcing him onto the ground and digging his knife into his back*

The most common (and natural response) is "uh, no you didn't".

It happened to (I think) Cleo LeFleur in Karnon Forest once...we just treated it as the man SAYING he was doing those things. I think we killed him. I forget.

It isn't healthy.... young people play this game, or those sensetive to such things... and whilst other charicter interactions are entirely voluntary, Rape is definitely not. you can't have consenting rape. i personally wouldnt want to be "Craped" (Cyber-raped) as its just sick.... i think if it happens and you don't like it, just ignore it.

Exactly. It's not like one character can just walk up to another and have sex with them, any more than they can do any other major activity without their cooperation. The only way I could see a rape working was lead up to it a little more gradually with input from both sides; the victim would need time to react, and a chance to fight the attacker off or escape. (Though whether they do or not is of course up to the player.)

I was about to start a thread like this. This is what I had written. I am mostly interested in the cr aspects.

My female char along with some others have experienced recent sexual attacks and I wanted to discuss some mechanics of roleplay which relate to this but could also relate to other kinds of events.

So this guy in his twenties with no weapon, no protection and no clothes is on the road abusing some female char who never reacts in any way. My char hits him with her bow and insults him for being a jackass. They trade insults for a while then, the next time I check, he has roleplayed an elaborate sexual assault on my char.

Now I don't like this kind of stuff to begin with but if it's possible and believable I might just accept that it happened. In this case, however, my char is much better armed and protected and I don't believe his char could possibly have attacked her (there was no description of overpowering or disarming her, he just walked up and did it).

I felt like there was no realistic way that I could continue roleplay in this situation other than to claim that his imagination was running away with him and he could not have done the thing he had just described...which just seemed lame but I couldn't think of another logical explaination.

I believe that this is a variety of breach since his actions were not consistant with the roleplaying rules as I know them, i.e. actions described have to be possible. I would appreciate thoughts and feedback on how to handle situations like this and also if other players consider it to be a breachy situation.

I believe this should have been reported in CR Breaches rather than support.

And Crosshair, in a roleplaying game you can actually have "consenting" rape, though that's not what this guy was doing. It doesn't have to be consenual for the character to be consenual for the player. They're the ones that are deciding to stick around and RP it out, after all.

Hmm, this conversation is one of those ones that likes to incite a riot.

Myself, I can admit that I have once, maybe twice, had a character force themself upon another. I won't say rape, because that just sounds like a disgusting word, so I'll pass on that.

Anyway, it's easier it you RP a bit with the other character, FIRST, that way you get a general idea if they are willing to RP. If you attempt RP, and they just talk back or something, then it's probably not worth it. It's very easy to see those hardcore RPers, being that I'm one of them. Regardless, if and when I notice that a particular character that I'm RPing with responds with RP themselves, then I take it upon myself to advance the plot, assuming they will make a responce, rather than just ignore the post and carry on, or attack my character when during my post, I -clearly- tackled them to the ground, and so grabbing their weapon would be near impossible :P

Of course, not the point.

The point is, hardcore RPers usually RP any situation they come by, and that's what I like. So if you get a few posts going with them before making such a durastic advance, and realise that they RP, then go for it. Otherwise, they'll probably play the "I didn't see that post" card.

But of course, in real life, it's wrong. Beyond wrong. But we're talking about Cantr. Where it's still wrong... in certian governments and locations, of course.

[Edit]:

I believe that this is a variety of breach since his actions were not consistant with the roleplaying rules as I know them, i.e. actions described have to be possible. I would appreciate thoughts and feedback on how to handle situations like this and also if other players consider it to be a breachy situation.

In such situations, I'd just ignore it. Sure, it's not normal RP practice, but they're not following it, why should you?

Kinvoya: Same guy, you think? And yeah, best thing you can do is act like he's threatening you (not a very impressive threat when he's unarmed) or talking about a fantasy. Pair that with an OOC whisper explaining why that kind of roleplay is pitiful, report him, and move on. Not a perfect solution, but if he persists he'll probably be banned anyway. Any extreme abuse of emotes (*flys to the moon*) is a CR breach, at least as I understand it.

Also, "an elaborate sexual assault" against a person who's not logged on isn't roleplay, it's a monologue or maybe a short story. You shouldn't be expected to take his input seriously if he's not even waiting around for yours. He might as well be standing there talking about this rape he's committing to an empty room, for all interaction with other players that's involved.

Is it that hard to make a rule saying something like: "Because of ethical reasons, raping in-game is not allowed."???

I know I'm perfectly able to do some role-playing without raping anyone and still enjoy the game.

And please, don't come with arguments like "in real life people are also getting raped and Cantr is a society-simulator. Raping sure has had it's influence on society." I could also come up with lame arguments like "people (and animals) aren't born in Cantr, but they spawn. Therefor sex and thus rapes do not exist when we take evolution into consideration."

I say forbid it.

There has already been a long discussion about rape in the "How Common is Sex in Cantr" thread (link below). I argued against it but for me that is not the issue here. I am more interested in whether it constitues a CR Breach for someone to describe actions that they could not have realistically carried out.

And, Lumin, from the times of the incidents I do believe it was the same player in at least two of the incidents.

I agree that Cantrians aren't biologically capable of producing offspring, but that doesn't seem to stop them from trying.

Still, I don't see how you can ban rape without banning all sex, too. And if that's the case, where do you draw the line? Is kissing considered a CR breach, too?

And if you ban the person playing the rapist, you'd have to ban the person playing the victim as well, just for going along with it.

I know it's not an issue that everyone's comfortable with, but as long as you:

1.) Keep it consensual
and
2.) Get a room

I don't see any problem with roleplaying rape or sex in general.

I suppose if it doesn't lead to Godmoding then it's ok..... Godmoding being:

"*she struggles out of his grip*

*he breaks her arms* muahahaha i am superman you cannot get free!"

.... ok very OTT but it happens...

Rape or any action in a way that doesn't give the other character a chance to reply is really lame. But rape when played well can be very effective changing both the victim and the assaulted mentally. Even a failed attempt can have a huge impact on someone's life. So I think banning rape and even more banning normal sex is out of question.

A problematic thing is that it's pretty hard to rape someone without people in the close distance noticing something. It would be irrealistic to do such things in private (I once witnessed such attempt in Brunoi, most of the people never realizing what the problem was about.) Different thing is if you rp dragging someone to a bush or behind a building, but it has been said that in Cantr nothing can be behind something. If someone would rp following them around what ever they happened to be behind of, they should either go public again or copy all they say to this watcher...

If there happens to be anyone reading this that has happened to witness some weird shit on Xiria region lately, sorry that's my character.

The current staff position is that, in order to protect minors playing this game and anybody who just isn't into cyber, role-playing any kind of sexual action is only allowed in the privacy of two (or more) consenting players. That is, each player must somehow make it clear through the actions of his character that he agrees with the direction the roleplay is heading. This way, it is each player's responsibility - minor or not - whether he gets into any sexual encounter, and nobody can accuse Cantr of being unsuitable for minors, or worse. A nice side effect is that sexual RP can't be a monologue.
