Soap

Postby Snake_byte » Tue Jan 11, 2005 8:37 pm

Since we can get dirty now... (well there is a meter for it anyhoo) I think that there should be soap. Now I heard that soap was made from animal fat and ashes but then I did a little research and found that it's a little more complicated than that.

This site has pretty good instructions that also include materials needed to make soap. Check it out

If someone starts making "Drop the soap" jokes, I'll shake my fist at you!

(And not in that sick, sick, sick way, you sick, sick minded sicko. That's just sick.)

But I agree. Something to clean yourself would be nice, and to add dirtiness. Then I can have my characters be all stuck up going "I say, you ahh' SOOOO dir-tay."

Yes, please make soap. I have one obsessive compulsive character who is constantly 'washing his hands' and worrying about dirt. I'd love to have him work on this!

Nonononono, you CAN'T make soap, that would break from TRADITION. You need to implement dirtyness, announce you can now get dirty (yay!) and if you're too dirty you can get sick (boo!) and even die (shriek!) and a way to clean yourselves will be implemented as soon as the coding is available...

Hey they added marble before there's a single building using it so it works other way too. Which relates to soap that they are both white. No wait, because they could add soap that does nothing, just like cots(?).

Soap can also be made from crushed horse chestnuts. It was used by the vikings.

As long as you have water, you can wash without soap. Generally rubbing and/or soaking works in place of soap. Also, you can wash with sand if you don't have water, you just end up a bit gritty at the end.

Of course, dirtyness would be yet another way to mess up production... at least we wouldn't have to relearn not to use hourly projects (dirt would of course be accumulated at the end of projects).

One obstructionist bar is bad enough. No more of them are needed.

Maybe the dirtyness accumulated at the end of a project could depend on which kind of project you're doing. Burying dead bodies or potatoe digging can get you very dirty whereas making tools and weapons wouldn't. Also just as we do, they should get somthing like 1% dirtyness for everyday added to the dirtyness at the end of a project.

Things to cure dirtiness should be rare and hard to come by. Why? Intentional Dirtiness.

"What?" you say?

Hobos. Bums. Vagrants, Ne'er do wells, Gypsies (ok not the Gypsies). Homeless poor people!

Can you say "Alms for the Poor?"

It'll be a new plauge. New spawns will be crying out how hungry and dirty they are and need help. Cantr good sense will lead me to find a cure for Alms. A closet with a lock on it sounds great.

I tihnk soap would be great. Animals would need to start dropping fat, and cooking meat would produce wood ashes that could be turned into lye. Preferrably you could add things like rose water or honey for the fancier stuff.

LOL, I have a small soap-making business in real life, so it's definitely a subject I'm interested in. Though we use vegetable oils and sodium hydroxide (sodium potassium would come from wood ashes, and it would make a softer soap)

I like this idea, it's perfect for seperating the rich and poor which in Cantr needs to be better defined.

Yes, I want felt.

Something I wrote on the RD forum but got ignored:
Soap is made of fat (or seed oil) and natriumhydroxide (which is made of soda and processed with limestone) and it will need this funnel-shaped kettle for making it. It is boiled in the kettle for one to two days, first only 1/4 of the natriumhydroxide is added, then the rest. Then we add salt, which will initiate a process of coagulation. The soap mass rises to the surface and on the bottom there's liquid that can be taken off and processed into glyserin. The soap mass is put into wooden or iron molds and there it hardens. The result is coloured gray or brown. Of 100 kilos of fat you get 130 to 140 kilos of soap. If the glyserin is not drained off, the soap is prettier and foams well but doesn't last as long.

Steady now

As for that process, it sounds awfully complicated for such a simple item. Is that the most primitive method of creating soap, or a modern method?
