The borders of the CR

Postby The Industriallist » Wed Oct 27, 2004 2:00 pm

Purely theoretical question:
Would it be a CR breach if you were informed out of character of an event in progress that was visible to one of your characters, so you would know to log on?

Obviously it would be if you acted based on information in the OOC communication. But 'waking up' isn't really an IC action...

That's pretty borderline, I think it would be because even though it's visible to your char, you would be acting on OOC info. I'm curious as to what PD has to say about it...

It's a bit weird if it's a breach...

I know there've been times I've stayed up 'till a certain time cuz i knew something would happen at that time...docking/undocking, arriving somewhere etc.

I also know that people have used messenger programs in the past to have each other log on at the same time for group efforts.

Ideally this wouldn't happen simply because nobody would know anyone else's characters. However, that's not the case for better or for worse.

I'd say it's a gray area.

Hmmm, yes. You certainly got a point about it being shady to coordinate attacks and other things OOC.

But telling someone "hey, your character is under attack in X" seems less unethical. But it must be hard to draw the line though....

I think it's impossible to judge or to control, since people theoretically *could* log in whenever they want. Just an imperfection we have to deal with.

It is not in the least bit shady about whether coordinating attacks oocly is a breach or not. It most definitely is, and about the worse kind there is. People have been banned from Cantr for this type of behaviour.

As for letting someone know they need to check their character, this theoretically shouldn't happen, but to just tell someone to check a certain char is not so bad as telling them why.

By that you mean carrying out 'IC' communication OOC, correct? What we mean here is just notifying the players of everyone in your army that they have reached their destination. If you tell someone about an action your character is about to take, that's a clear breach. If you know they have a character that can see it, does the same apply to telling them about an action you just did take?

Accepting that as the word from on high...why not?

Indus. is right; we're not talking coordinating as in having what would normally be IC communications on the messenger, just messaging to tell someone to be on, etc.

We all agree that the former is bad.

It is not alright to talk to another player (players) to coordinate what time to be "awake".

If someone is on (as in messenger), and something interesting happens, a poke to say "go check out Quill" is not so bad, but to say "I just hit the Sheriff in Brunoi, get on and help me" is no good.

"Go check out Quill, there's a massacre going on" is saying too much, in my opinion.

I definitely disagree! Lets say two players want to start an attack, is it wrong to say "Hey lets get them at 991-3" ? I don't think so... and that would imply waking up at that time. Also, I'd say players have the right to agree to a time for a chat-like session between their characters. However, meeting arrangements like this should be made in-game and NOT via other internet/RL channels.

I'd say it's not OK at all to coordinate ANY IC activity by ANY OOC means. IM, forums, in-game OOC comments... Nothing at all.

If, on the other hand, your character specifically arranged something to happen at a certain time IN CHARACTER, then that's fine.

And I'd say even suggesting that someone should check a character is a breach. If a minor one.

so, if you've agreed IC to be awake at a certain time, is it bad to remind them OOC?

Yeah, I think that would be pretty awful. You can't play the game, outside of the game.

*nods at Rev and Chrissy* It has to be done in character only.
