Problem with Descriptions Guideline *Staff Feedback Wanted*

Postby Money » Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:29 pm

I know this isn't the place to bring this up but totally unsure where it should go. Please move this to the proper place.

I was reading the descriptions guidelines and noticed something unclear in the final bullet point.

It should be easy to distinguish objective descriptions with text written on an object's label. For example, the description "red bottle" is ambiguous. "*red bottle*", "*a big bottle with label*", "red bottle", or "big bottle with label: 'red bottle' " are correct.

It claims that while "red bottle" is an ambiguous description then uses "red bottle" again as an example of a nicely objective description that won't be mixed up with a label. I think a better example may be in order, the red bottle bit is confusing. Also since labels are hard coded into the game shouldn't it not be in the description at all? Corrections are welcome, this just seems all rather confusing to me.

The use of quotes makes it difficult to read.

What I understand is that if you just put "red bottle" people can't know if it's the description of the bottle or the text of the label.

And the nicely example is our using the ** so it's clear that it's a description or the whole sentence:

*A big bottle with a label.* "red bottle"

In any case, as Seko said, the whole bunch of signs and quotes makes it confusing...

I think it would be easier for people to understand if the quotes were taken away, and formatting was used to indicate label text, instead. Like, a different font, or bold, or something.

The guidelines are sensible, once deciphered, though. Just like you wouldn't describe actions in a dialogue box without using *'s or sometimes -'s.

How about this:
It should be easy to distinguish between the description of the object itself and text written on an object's label. For example, the description "red bottle" is ambiguous. It could mean that the bottle is red or that the bottle has a label that says "red bottle". Instead, you could use *red bottle*, *a big bottle with a label*, or "big bottle with the label: 'red bottle'".

Or just have it in a list, no quotation marks. I believe the original post did have it like that so I'm not sure why that was changed.

This is acceptable:
  • "Red Bottle"
  • *Red Bottle*
  • etc
