Animals demand food before they're tamed

Is this normal/the way it should be?

If someone just starts taming an animal, it posts a message that the animal is hungry even if the taming project isn't finished. Should animals start demanding food before they're fully tamed? If someone never finishes taming an animal, will it die of starvation?
