Re: Swimming
The fastest man to swim the English Channel did so with an average speed of about 3 mph. Most sailboats travel anywhere between 4 knots to 9 knots (depending on who you ask and what sort of boat we're talking about; for the record, I got this information from a discussion on modern sailing boats, most relatively small) which is around 5-10 mph. It is also possible for a sailboat to sail faster than windspeed, apparently. That said -
People get exhausted. Boats don't. People get worn out, especially when keeping up high speeds like 3 mph, and exhaustion leads to drowning and death, especially when you're carting around 30+ lbs of junk on your back, not including clothing. Consider also that most large bodies of water (including rivers) are not placid, calm places - you have to deal with incredibly rough surf, waves, currents, etc. On top of that, there are also dangerous animals in the water, such as sharks, alligators, crocodiles, some shoals of fish, etc.

I think it`d be cool.
You see a man in his twenties wash ashore , bleeding profusely with large bite marks.
You see a shark attack a man in his thirties.
You see a man in his twenties docking to xxxxxx
You are attacked by a stingray, you have died.
You get exhausted and start sinking.
Eh.... yeah maybe not.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Burial at sea is already possible but it would be nice having the ability to throw people overboard.

Re: Swimming
I don't see this as something that would be good for travel. I could see this as something you do from a non-moving water vehicle or at a water touching location. It could maybe be used for accessing different types of rare resources in small quantities or as simply something to do in game. Like resting, but without any gain.... or maybe you increase in tiredness and gain strength.

Re: Swimming
***NEW SUGGESTION***
Why not have a swimming activity that can be performed in harbors, landing stages, and sea/lake locations. Doing the swimming activity trains strength but costs tiredness.

Re: Swimming
I like it. I always wonder when role playing swimming in harbours how it works. It's a seperate building, does it have a beach?
Would it take a project tick? or be a once a day action like hunting and hitting?

Re: Swimming
A little off-topic, but I consider harbors to be like docks or a pier. So, instead of RPing it as a beach, mine might sit on the edge of the dock with their feet dangling in the water or hold on to the dock while wading in the water, etc.

It would be a project tick, and continue until the character stops swimming, or is exhausted (100% tiredness)

Re: Swimming
Tiredness should be affected by weight of stuff being carried. Setting speed to 0 should count as floating and would regenerate energy but there should probably be a limit to how long someone can stay in the water, even if they were resting in the middle, since eventually anybody would die of hypothermia.

Re: Swimming
I think it seems logical that if someone let their tiredness reach 100% while swimming, they should drown.

Re: Swimming
Cantr is a slow paced game, so I think that drowning shouldn't be possible. I don't need to be logged everyday to check if my char drowned or not, the same like I don't have to check everyday if the sail (or something else) I'm building is ready or not.
