Would it be frowned upon...

Postby Pure_Dunga » Thu Dec 09, 2010 5:02 pm

..to use lyrics of songs from real life in Cantr. Or jokes? Or stories?

Adaptations may be closer to what I mean, but if say I wanted one of my characters to sing a song, and I myself as a player am hopeless at writing lyrics, how would it be looked upon if I were to adapt a song by an artist we here every day?

Ripping off a song entirely - really bad form and a CRB

Adapting a song to Cantr - the effort shows you tried, but some might still consider it bad form. One of my character's adapted a song that she sang to her sister. If anyone didn't like it, too bad. It was sweet and appropriate.

I can understand why, but at the same time, if common sense and a little subtly is used then it must be workable? The characters in the world of Cantr don't have knowledge of anything else bar what they've heard and seen, so what would be strange to them if they heard something that was plucked from an old song?

I could write lyrics now, adapt them to a place in Cantr, and it may be a song that I've heard and you haven't and you wouldn't know the difference?

Real life songs and poems almost always include elements that don't exist in Cantr, and they tend to make people cringe. It's best to write lyrics from scratch or at least to edit the parts that wouldn't make sense for the character that supposedly wrote the song in-game. If you like a tune, you can write new lyrics for it and others can't be annoyed because they won't recognize the tune based on words alone, but having a tune in your head should make it easier to write lyrics that work.

If you suck at writing a good song, write a bad one :p Knowingly write a bad one. Knowingly sing the bad one. See what happens.

I can guarantee you the outcome will be more entertaining that way, than the cheap alternative.

It'd have to be adapted pretty heavily to make sense for Cantr, and at least that would show a little originality, so I don't think I'd mind in most cases...but if this is for one of those music or poetry contests that seem to be popping up all over the place then yeah, I'd say it kind of bad form.

I don't mind if someone emotes "to the tune of X" to give others an idea of the tempo etc, but only if the majority of words are changed. If only a couple words in the whole song are changed then I find it lame. For contests it should definitely be original.

Some things are hard to adapt but I don't mind jokes or sayings being used too much. I was debating the other day if I should have a char say their "dogs were tired" after traveling a long road, but couldn't come up with a good way to suit it to Cantr. There are just so many phrases we consider common that a lot of things said in-game technically shouldn't be since they didn't originate there.

Most things I wouldn't consider reporting unless it was done often and blatantly, like the example Bowser pasted above.

I heard someone say "Don't jump the crossbow", which made me giggle like only cantr nerds can.

I forgot to put characters who use or adapt RL lyrics in the "characters that irritate you" thread... Yeah... It's so... uninspiring. *sighs* Specially when you recognize the song, sucks... You don't see the character the same way again.
I had someone spit out the whole lyrics of a Michael Jackson song to me, not even one of the good ones. I had to make such an effort to swallow hard and say I liked it (it was coherent with my character's feelings and blah). *clenches fists*
At that moment I felt like out of the matrix for the first time. I thought: this is stupid.
