Rope for a well

I read somewhere, it must have been in the Wiki, that you could use rope made from sinew to make a well.

Well, I just spent five days making 1/5 of what I'll need and it doesn't work on the well project.

Anyone have the truth about sinew rope?

A well needs medium rope. You can make some using thin rope and a rope machine. Before that, you need string, which can be made from sinew, using a twiner or simple twiner.

A rope is a rope, there's no difference becouse of what was it made of.

Are you sure you're using the right kind of rope, though? Not a string, for example?

Because I have to build the rope machine, as well, and the sinew to string is at 20 grams per day.

Assuming that you have a simple twiner (because of the 20 grams of string per day), you have a lack of iron. Without iron to make a rope machine, you're dead in the water (no pun intended). If you do have iron, it may be worth it to build a twiner instead, so that you can make string 150% faster.

Using the simple twiner method, it'll take about 62.5 days total (3+ years) to start getting water. That includes building the rope machine, wooden bucket, and well and assumes you have all the sinew, stone, wood, iron, and tools.

Using the twiner method, it'll take about 32.5 days (1.5+ years). That also includes machines.

If you can find another character to work with you, it could take between 16-31 days. It's not 800 years, but it's certainly awhile. And probably out of reach for any small, poor town. Maybe getting 85 grams of iron for a carving knife to make a wooden bucket might be the best thing. Only 50 grams of water a day, but very doable. 25 a day for a water skin, no iron needed.

I sympathize. I have a character who is on a sparsely populated island. He has worked on developing a town for years. Only recently has a well been built, long after many other buildings and machines, and after a moderate amount of iron was available.

What do you want the water for? Until you have gotten further along in town development, or you have traded for medium rope, you are probably better off collecting water with a water skin or wooden bucket.
