Dual action foods could heal on food tick

Postby SekoETC » Sat Jul 04, 2009 11:37 am

I'm not even sure if we have dual action foods anymore because they've generally been unoptimal for a daily food, and people get annoyed when they get eaten accidentally even though they were trying to save them for healing - but if they reduced both damage and hunger while eaten on the food tick, that would give them a new use. They could be used to heal sleeping or resisting patients (albeit slowly) and people wouldn't have to make the choice between starving and healing themselves. It would also give natural healing back in some form.

I don't think it would be difficult to program either. When someone eats on the food tick, we already know how much has been eaten that time, then it could check if that particular food has a strenghtening value, if yes then calculate how much health it restores and heal the character that much, or up to max if current damage is less than the potential healing. There could be a lot of foods that would be suboptimal in combat due to being heavy, but could be used to heal slowly in a peaceful environment.

Oooooh I like it!

Yes, I have been annoyed when my character ate healing food instead of potatoes or something.

I hope it wouldn't be too difficult to implement.

Wouldn't e.g. spinach have to reduce hunger too when eaten voluntarily to keep it consistent? Well, probably not...

If we would implement that system we could give dual values to every kind of food and would be able to get rid of the artifical distinction between healing and nourishing foods, although there would still be foods with better nourishing or healing qualities.
Pretty in pink.

Technically it sounds like a good idea (I mean the thought about getting rid of the artificial limit, not the thing about allowing one to reduce hunger with the eat button), but I think there should be a cap to how much a person can eat in a day. Otherwise people could eat dozens of kilos of inefficient dual action foods within seconds, giving thieves a way of getting rid of far more things that is currently possible. If there was an eating cap for both healing food and what's eaten on the food tick, that would give a reason for eating compact foods, even if they were expensive to make, since if you were eating heavy things like potatoes, you could only heal like 1-2% a day. Also this would make the eating sickness more of a potential health risk, since it would reduce your healing capacity.

There are still a few dual foods in game, but I'd like to remove them, unless there's locations that lives on them.
