Capital Rule

Postby Dapre » Sun Feb 17, 2008 7:01 pm

I've been reading through these forums a lot lately, mostly to see whats in here and so on, and I've noticed that to some of the people writing here the CR is like Allah to muslims, God to christians or Xenu to Tom Cruise...

I understand why the CR is there, I understand why someone value it as much as they do. But doesn't it go a bit too far when theres discussion about taking over the world and people start thinking if it's a CRB when you think of taking over the world, since you don't get that much influences to that sort of stuff IG. (nothing personal against anyone, it was just the last thread I read before posting this)
If you think of it that way, isn't it a CRB also, when yout char wants to make a boat, but has never even seen water and doesn't know what it is.. Gas, solid, liquid? Same thing when you char lives in a forest without cotton, has never left but would still like to make cotton trousers?
Based on my experience, that kind of stuff happens a lot.

I personally play this game for fun, but after I started reading the forums more, the has been times when I've had to stop for 10 minutes to think what I'm doing and if I might be breaking the CR - even when it is a little thing. I don't want my best character, currently travelling, to die of hunger while my account is locked.

I don't know how serious people have been when they've written about keeping notes, that your char doesn't have, but you do. I.e. a resource-list, or anything, as a punishable CRB (just an example). But I feel like it goes a bit far. I know there is no way on earth to (legally) see if I have written a word document to my desktop about my char's materials and needs and don't have the same text on a note with my char, but it's kind of intimidiating that people want to punish from "something as little as that" and I personally don't know how long I'd like to play the game, even though I feel like an addict when I use my minutes up 4 days a week.

And please, I would appreciate it, if you can leave the "You probably should take a break or quit then" and "You shouldn't be doing stuff that you think would be a CRB" -comments and make some real statements about this issue, and not me.

And again, the examples are just the things that came from the top of my head and I don't even remember who wrote about the world-domination-CRB -thing or the note-thing.

I see you read my thread and we discussed it and found it was not a CRB

Personally, I think most of the examples you presented above are up to how realistically the player wants to play. By no means are you going to be banned for playing a character from the middle of a desert that wants a boat... That's basically a realism issue for that player to figure out him or herself. After you've played for a good long while, you'll probably find it more fun overall to simply dive a little deeper into the roleplaying of it all, and strive for more "realistic" character development. You're not going to get banned for little roleplay issues like that.

It's the people who work together OOC to time attacks, people who pool their own character's resources, and the people who spoil in game information by leaking it to the forums too early... That's the stuff that sort of ruins the fun of cantr. That's the stuff you'll get in trouble for.

On another note about boats... Once, a long while ago, I got incredibly pissed off when a group of us mainlanders when out to build a boat, and while we were discussing what boats we'd be building, one character simply read off a ton of wiki-facts, making it seem like their character was an expert in the field of seafaring, when that character had never even witnessed a boat being made, and might have only seen the water twice, very briefly. Again, I guess it's technically only bending the rules, but it was stupid and made no sense.

People are allowed to know everything in the Wiki, which includes how stuff is made. Allowed. That doesn't mean one would have to remember it all, or be obliged to look it up. It's just for the convenience of the players.

It's not a CRB to talk about making a boat right after spawning in the middle of a desert, but it's certainly bad RP, in my opinion. When you are spawned on a desert, your character should think like a desert person and the player should adjust. But if the player is not prone to creative thinking and they had decided before making the character that they want to make a pirate then it might be hard to adjust.

A different thing would be if this genius of a character knew where to find wood for the boat, or which way to go to find a sea to sail on, unless they have seen a map. Now that would be a big fat CRB.

Edit: And also it's not a CRB to talk about taking over the world, just as long as you are not aware of regions you have never seen, read about or heard of. You may start guessing there are many towns when you have seen more than one. When you are spawned, you see roads leading out and you know they go somewhere. Before you see water, you might as well assume that the world extends until it hits the ends of the "dome", the circle in the center of which you are. When you walk, you notice that the edges just keep escaping from you, so you migght think that the land contines forever, until you run into a shore. Then you might imagine that your island is the center of the world. Once you have discovered the concept of an island, you may come to think that there are several islands.

yep...just like Seko said. It's all on the players hand. Like when you see something your char has never seen...Like a resource from another location. You can call it green strange thing and not spinage just for rp  it's fun...

Dapre, one easy litmus test for crb is to ask yourself: Could what I would like to play out possibly create an unfair advantage for my char over the chars of other players? Keeping the game fair for everyone needs to be valued even above continuity in RP.

I thought that characters could know anything in the Wiki. If they're real know-it-alls, then I guess they could know everything on there, but to make decent RP, I find it generally makes sense to know just some.

Knowing everything on the Wiki is a bit too unbelieveable - like asking for a hemp jacket on an island where no hemp grows. But knowing nothing other than what you've seen is unworkable as you'd have to keep asking people what everything was, or how to make everything, every two seconds, like "how do you make iron?" "you need some charcoal" "what's charcoal" "wood burnt in a kiln" "what's a kiln?" "made out of stone and clay" "what are stone and clay... and how do I use this kiln when I've made it?" etc. Somewhere in the middle, there's a balance that gives good roleplay. But I think that whereever you sit on the scale, knowing Wiki information such as how to build a boat is not a CRB. Liable to be crappy RP unless you had a good reason for knowing so much/little, but not a CRB.

You really have to work hard at rule-breaking to have your account locked. From what I've seen the PD do their utmost to help players when they've accidentally broken the rules, and it's only after a great deal of non-co-operation that they resort to account locking. Even then, the times are not going to be long if players then start acting reasonably.

Yeah, accounts are locked when people are acting like dicks and refusing to tell PD what they're doing. They're all "I didn't do anything" while having 15 characters on the way to a rendez-vous point. Here's some news for you, PD can see where your characters are and what they are doing (for example when you give stuff from one character to another, drag a person together or hit a person) so 1) don't do that and 2) if you do, don't assume that no one would notice. They can also figure out if you got several accounts.

When I hear of people being retarded liars, especially when they come to the forums and whine that they didn't do anything, I wish I could go over to their place IRL and physically damage them because I hate lying.

Here's a little thought for those who might consider dabbling in the area of self-respect...

If a person feel such a need to use OOC knowledge to gain an unfair advantage in this game; say, to improve chances in an attack against an adversary, then what it says about that person is they are a weak, small, and petty person. They feel they don't have the wherewithal to win a battle using honest, ingame strategy, which is a gamble.

In my opinion, cheaters are petulant brats are the most selfish sorts. It's not about the adventure of the game - any game - it's not about stretching yourself to see how far you can go within the structure provided, or the skills and knowledge you or your characters have, it's about winning at all cost. And if you have to cheat to win, you have no skill. The better person can accept defeat with pride, knowing they did the best to their abilities. The person that can't accept defeat is a child. In the end the cost is the enjoyment of the game by all concerned, and the cheater no longer being able to play.

So cheaters, put that in your pipe and smoke it!

I got my account blocked for a time! but I wasn't joining a army to beat you all and win...In fact I learned from the beggining this game can't be exactly "won". I made 2 accounts because I love this game so much that I thought 15 chars ain't enough! :D bit stupid but ah....

A lot of people have done that. Well, not sure how many but I know one person who is a nice person and a good player and started off having two accounts. They got two characters in my town, one from each account, and my character liked them both. I didn't realize they were played by the same person even though I should have suspected something when they were often awake at the same time. Then PD tells her to select 15 characters, the rest would be deleted. They were thinking she could keep both of these two alive if one of them moves out. But what does she do, she selects one of them to be deleted and has the other one move out. So my character practically lost two friends within short time. There's an example how having two accounts can hurt people even if you weren't using them to gain advantage over other players.

I had a problem where maybe 4 of my first 5 charries spawned on K-isle, which as you may or may not know is a pretty small place. It's tough to have even two folks on that island that would never interact or influence each other in any way. I let a couple die off, and had two, well they ended up in the same town by chance and had very IG reasons for staying there. I tried to keep one indoors at all times and the other out, but it didn't work. Tried separating them by sending one to another town. Anyway lots of details but in the end I had to come up with an IG reason for one to be offed. It sucked. I liked playing them both.

A couple other times I've had charries in the same town, even if only briefly, and somehow I never fail to speak the words of one from the mouth of the other. Insufficient attention to detail. And then the OOC apologies, and hoping information let slip isn't horribly damaging, etc.

Points:

1) It's almost inevitable that you will face a CRB with your charries at some point.
2) There's almost no good way of resolving one, so...
3) Avoid them at all costs, but...
4) See #1
I kill threads. It's what I do.

:? , i will stick to just 1 character then, since i expect my character to eventually travel all over the (not-so-big-non-english) isle he lives on...
