Fire arrows

Postby Joshuamonkey » Sun Sep 09, 2007 1:44 am

In medieval times there was a slight chance that they had fire arrows. One way to make the fire stay lit during flight would to put a potato on the arrow after being soaked in oil. Then you would light it and shoot.
To make a fire arrow you would need a type of bow, a few grams of potatoes, and a few grams of oil and a source of fire to light it on fire.

It was not potatoes it was cloth wraped onto the arrow and cloth was soaked in a burnable liquid.
Potatoes are not as well able to absorb liquid as well as cloth.
And why waste food? They would not do that.

One more thing I must say again.
This is not real life. I would really like to see people not try to make it real life.
If I wanted to play a game that was like real life, I would not be playing Cantr.

I have been through this myself.

If you have nothing to add to the discussion then do not say anything at all.

What the fuck is "Bag End"?

I am adding to a certain discussion; it's just really hard for one to decipher; don't feel like you're the only one. Just making a point that though Cantr is a reality different from ours, it is a another reality, and as such should not include neither buildings or characters from Lord of the Rings. Not saying that I'm assuming you do, so don't make me feel like I'm going to throw up again. Go ahead and feel that the following is some cowardly excuse, but I was trying to be more humorus than annal back there. I guess you can say I was both, and still is.

What the hell does a little guy with a ring have to do with this suggestion?
Lord of the Ring has not a damn thing to do with this suggestion.

What is the effect of these? They're more for damaging property than people... so once property damage is implemented... why not, along with siege weapons like catapults etc which have probably already been suggested.

hehe... Yea...

Thinking about putting a potatoe on an arrow made me think this line:

"Wichita: Congradulations, everone! We have just introduced "potatoe on a stick" Into cantr!"

They wouldn't put a potatoe on an arrow! It would weigh it down way to much! Even when putting cloth on an arrow, it was hard to make it so that it wouldn't block air-flow in a way that would make that arrow useless!

Wait... have we implumented ammunition for stuff like that into cantr yet?

I actualy like the idea
it would make attack and defending towns a lot more fun
if the pirates shoot a fire arrow at a building then siege on the cty becomes more fun
whole towns can be destroyed and then you'd have to rebuild, it would make war more fun
also, you could add torches and matches to enhance siege play or fire can be used as torture and weapons

It should be more like an automatic project: burning cottage X or burning town and it would last at least a day, and people could put it off if they woke up in time. Just like lockbreaking, gotta give people time to react. Because it's a slow-paced game. If you had a torch then you could go light up buildings and it would always be a "hit" but with arrows they would have a chance of missing or hitting the building next to the target. With torches you would have to enter the town so pirates couldn't hide on the boat. Would houses also have a one hit per day rule or would the whole town have a one hit per day rule, so that you can only shoot one arrow?

But anyway, if it was possible to shoot at a town from a boat then it should also be possible to shoot from the town to the boat - even after it has undocked. Though the chance of hitting would quickly lower based on distance. If they were at instant docking range, they could be hit like an awkward fighter person. If they were one hour away then it would be a bit more difficult. Two hours away, maybe 50%, three hours away very unlikely and beyond that impossible.

Yes, I agree, you could shot the ship and as it moves away it would be harder to hit. I would say each building gets one hit a day, but also torches should be able to miss because there is a chance that the building wont light on fire. Also based on what the building is made of it would be harder to light on fire.

id personally say it shouldnt be a one hit per day thing for buildings, but rather a project based "fire into city" thing. So maybe every hour an arrow is launched or somesuch with a 50% chance of hitting something. this would keep pirates from being even more annoying, because lets face it, there would be people who rain fire down on a town and leave for no reason at all just to 'live the pirate life'

Pirates usually have a reason to do stuff, they dont kill for the hell of it (well some did, but many would steal your stuff for what they need or want and let you live, because if you are dead they cant rob you again)

This also would add the ability to destroy buildings. (maybe vehicles and landmarks?) Some towns have more buildings than they want.

yes we should be able to destroy buildings... Wars would be cooler if u could destroy buildings and some ruins stay there.

And boats... like ( i know this is a little off topic but...) a war in the seas? It would rock! And if the boat was destroyed and you were still alive u could be on the seas for some time... If you were near land u would get there, boats nearby could cacth you. If the char wasn't close to land, another boat, the char would die on the next day or the next 2 days maybe.... But navy wars would rule!
