Just because things of matter and import happen there doesn't make it a good place to live. Things of matter and import happen at the United Nations (presumably) but I woudln't want to live there. Nor in Baghdad.
Furthermore, Lad has no modern analogue as far as the entire-citizenry-is-captive-workforce goes, except maybe Cultural-Revolution-era China.

It's not the entire citizenry, there is a small elite with some autonomy... There are plenty of low-income countries with slave-sweat shop economies. I'm not speaking for or against Lad in that respect as far as a good place to live. I have been partial to Sring-Sri Island, as a place of great potential, and kind of neat, because you can wrap your head around the entire little self contained island. It would be neat to see Sring-Sri Island develop from a primitive island culture with petty occasionally warring regions into a massive modern trading nation like Japan. I don't have any characters there right now... Or even if it became an Imperial protectorate of some great power that would be neat, because of contact the Imperial rulers might revolt from the mainland and have their own Sring-Sri Culture develop in the distant future... I just see a lot that could happen.

I agree with that. But I think the implied argument with some that bring up "this could never happen IRL et cetra et cetra" is just pointing to some game balance issues that make the game wieghted too far in a given direction or too fantasy land-like, without a real "explanation for how it could possibly work" ..... or something. Not so much that it has to be a mirror of Earth, just that the laws of gravity (only extended to other things to) would be the same et cetra... so to speak.
If you read my statism v. responsibility post in suggestions you will get a better explanation of what I am trying to put across now.

Lad punishs leaving that one thing that hard to deal with.
That is a correction a things that are artifically brought in by the players:
Travelling away without fear. That is contrary to what people could do in the past.
That being said I never survived there for long and am not there now. But now that I have less time I would be a happy little rice farmer.

hmmm... that sounds very bad. i wish i had a character there now (not locked up i mean). kwor will always have a special place with me as it was where my first character was spawned
... and it wasn't so bad there then. kwor is also the hub of the k island, which i am very wrapped up in. my first character has probably had the worst luck imaginable short of being killed, but someday i hope she'll be welcomed in kwor again.
DOOM!
