Is profanity allowed?

Postby Marian » Sat Nov 11, 2006 5:14 am

I'm asking this because of the thread Hagan posted. (I would have posted it there but it was locked...)

My chars don't swear that often, but some of them definitely will if they get angry or frustrated enough. And a couple of them have been called all kinds of nasty things by people they're chasiing. I've never thought of reporting it though, should I be? (And should I be censoring mine?)

But it seems like it would actually be OOC for someone not to react strongly if they're being murdered or something. Even people who deserve to die cuss my chars out all the time and I don't make a big deal out of it, I wouldn't unless it was obviously directed at me and not my char.

I'll admit that I really don't like what that thread implied...I know there was something about kids mentioned in Hagan's thread, but come on, violent murder is okay, torture is okay, but a bad word isn't because a kid might see it? What's the difference between seeing a bad word in a note and seeing someone say a bad word anyway? Once you censor one you have to censor the other. IMHO kids shouldn't be playing anyway....there's all kinds of potentially offensive things going on in this game, (lots and lots of sex, to begin with) and if a parent is letting them play or even watch they should be prepared for that. (Especially if they're purposely doing things that are going to piss other chars off.) It's no different from turning your kid loose in a chat room, really.

If censorship is required I'll be extra careful to restrict what my chars do and say in the future, but it's really disappointing to me and will probably mean some changes in their personalities.

...I just always figured Cantr was a game aimed at mature adults, not the Neopets crowd. :?

I agree with you about not having smaller kids playing the game. It is not the type of game that most of them would really be able to play correctly anyways. It takes a fairly decent amount of I guess you could say maturity to play a game like this one. Its not your typical Runescape type game.

On the other hand though, I really don't see the point in having to have your character use heavy swearing in the game. I mean just act like its not in his vocabulary and use your brain to find another way in the english language to express your frustration or anger.

I can see where you're coming from, but obviously not all chars are polite intellectuals. In RL I don't like it when people swear a lot either, but damn it, make me mad enough and I'll do it too! ;)

And that brings up another point...where do you draw the line? Okay, so let's say the f-bomb is now a reportable offense, what happens when you get people who are offended (or who's kids might be corrupted) by milder stuff? I have a char who says hell and damn in casual conversation and who'll call people they don't like things like bastard, prick, bitch, asshole....I even have a char that has the term 'pretentious asses' in an official town note. (And they own several notes with worse words, copied and pasted from when they were chasing criminals with dirty mouths.) Should those be edited out because someone might come across them someday and be offended?

Oh, and did I just traumatize somebody's kid with the above paragraph? Well sorry, but maybe they shouldn't be reading the forum in the first place. The internet's a scary place.

I understand what you are saying, and I am not saying you are wrong for it. I just choose myself not too use much swearing in the game because it may happen to offend or bother someone, and I wouldn't want to discourage anyone else from playing the game.

Its like this, you go to a family reunion where there are a bunch of adults and kids. So you all decided to play a poker game, and even though its not really a little kid's game, you decided to let your young nieces and nephews play. Would you swear alot in the game, or would you try to keep it to a minumum, because of the kids, and possibly a grandma who dispises the use of swear words?

I just look at it is common courtesy. *shrugs* Just my opinion though. *smiles*

Some of my chars have the mouths of sailors, in public as well as in private, and I refuse to apologise for it. I don't wish to offend anyone, but I think this is simply not a children's game.

Hasn't this discussion occurred regularly here?

It has occurred before, along with that of rape. I'd have thought a bit of imagination could bring up some alternative to RL curses, as they don't seem to fit (to me at least.)
But if you have a violent char, you gotta play him that way, and if that involves rape, sodomy, bestiality or whatever, as well as murder and maiming, so be it.
(Andur, the Kworian seafarer/pirate seems to have developed his own swear words.)

I've developped alternatives, such as son of a goat (even though Cantr doesn't have sons), goatsucker, and...... hmm, could've sworn there was more.

Then there's the all-useful josdamn on the Cantr island. I try to avoid saying god since the majority of my characters are pagans. One tends to say "for spirits' sake" because she was spawned in a location where people were leaving offerings to some spirits. And another one tends to say sweet heavens, or something like that, although I'm not sure where it comes from.

Some of my characters tend to say bloody hell a lot, and I've adopted that to OOC chatting, not the other way around.

And at least one of my characters tends to use the f-word when he's pissed. Once he got told to watch his tongue because there's women and newspawns around. And he replied, where wouldn't there be? - Tell me the location and I'll be there in a flash.

Anyway, after that incident I started thinking would it be possible to get an optional profanity filter in Cantr that people can switch on and off? Having it replace words with asterisks would not be that stylish, but if replaced cock with rooster :P and bitch with female dog, most harsh alternatives of the male organ with either plain penis or then manhood; shit with poop... ( XD I can't write this without laughing.) piss with urine, rape with illegal appropriation of a sexual organ - raped would then naturally be "illegally appropriated a sexual organ of" to fit in with most sentences. Fuck - "perform sexual intercourse with". Pussy with kitty, cunt with either vagina or "the opening between the woman's legs".

... and just for arguments sake.... most of these profanities are OOC being brought into the game...
.. as past discussion has carried... how do we know cantrains have manhoods or women have kitties? if they don't how do they perform sexual intercourse...( though they often do in whispers in public places....) soooo if these words are acceptable.. then why do people have a fit about the other OOC things being brought in... Make up words that fit the cantrain life...

why do people see the use of profanity as necessary? (I am not saying I never swear... but my charris don't... mainly due to courtsey to other who do not wish to hear it (read it)

I believe alot of the use of these words are done only to spite those who do not wish to here it...and to just prove that they can.

Maybe we don't want Cantr to resemble dolls' tea party! I value realism above all things.

Example: When I read in a magazine about the tv series "Prison Break" being pre-censored so that they don't swear and there are no homosexual relationships, I was like man that's so full of SHIT! So I haven't watched it for one bit.

When I play Cantr, I play by instinct. Some of my characters have a short temper and a sharp tongue. Some of them are rather nice and polite. If a character is mad then I won't start flowering up their word choices just because some rare cases might be offended.

Mostly I think you're just being hyper-sensitive, Sunni. People like that piss me off. Most people who play Cantr are adults and should not freak out over seeing a damn here and shit there. If they do then let's employ the profanity filter. But I don't think roleplaying should be limited by some whiners who can't take the coldness of reality. --- Otherwise we might as well found a second Cantr server that has no violence, no starvation, no gathering limits, no locks, unlimited inventory space... Yeah, and everyone would spawn in unremovable swimming suits with legs down to mid-thigh.

Here Here... people swear, its a fact of life, and it's unfortunate, but it happens, and to me, (i still go to school) Profanities mean nothing. I've heard F*** (censored for Forums sake) so many times its just another word... dont get me started on anything else...

But in Cantr, profanities hold more sway, but if people swear, you can't stop them, if people are rude like that.

This has been moved to General Discussions - The Capital Rules Breaches forums is for the reporting of possible CRB's not for general discussion of rules and acceptable behaviour.

There is no rule against profanity in Cantr. There are rules against abusive players who use language or other actions such as note bombing to disrupt the game play

If I remember correctly, rape was banned from the game, though - are people still playing rape scenes?

I don't remember a ban per se, but I think it was agreed that role play can not occur in those situations where it is not reciprocated, if that makes sense.

If I am forgetting something, maybe someone could post the link?

That's not what I remember, It's my understanding that any sexual RP is allowed as long as its between consensual players. The characters involved may not be consenting but the players have to be.

It's also my understanding that such activity should be conducted in private - either by whispering or by being inside buildings.

EDIT Beaten to it - I meant to say I agree with BC :D

Seko, I didn't say a thing about the words shit or damn.... reread my post... I am not saying there should be a ban on profanity, my point is being the use of words that have an OOC meaning that are brought into the game and used. So many things are complained about for being brought into the game... like Jesus... and God and a specific type of religion..... these are all ooc influenced and it has been extensively discussed about it being a CRB... if this is true, then the words F*** and pu*** are just that...OOC influenced words.

Most my charris have never swore, because there really isn't a need. If I happen to be in a foul mouthed town.. I will use my OOC judgement to leave, thats all. A cuss word here and there has never bothered my charris in game, and I am not saying it shouldn't be there, What I said, is be creative ...if you can... and make your own Cantrain words...
