From container to ground?

Why, when you remove material from a container, does it fall to the ground instead of land in your inventory? Thanks.

Because it has always been that way. Naturally you would think that the game knows who took stuff from the container, since it knows to say "a man in his twenties taking something from a container" or something like that, but it isn't relayed to this person's inventory because they would have to count if there's room...

It is annoying though, and confusing to anyone doing it for the first time, but I see your point.
