Murder and other damaging actions
Hello all. I am very new to this game, and was wondering a bit about some possible actions and their ramifications.
I know this is a RP game but, how is murder (or other damaging actions) are seen in the game? Since death is final in the game, and people might grow attached to their characters, is this something really frowned upon? I suppose one is free to play as a serial killer right?

Players who have their characters murdered will likely be unhappy...
But for the game as a whole, a well-RPed murder is fine. Morals should be from the game, not enforced from the real world.
Don't just start that way from the off, these things take time to develop. At least... I think they do...

OOCly, it probably is. But who cares? It's a game, and if it is true to the game, people will deal with it. Well... most people will...is this something really frowned upon?
Damn right. Just make sure you do it properly, okay?I suppose one is free to play as a serial killer right?

Well, obviously... but what I meant was that people shouldn't just spawn and become a serial killer. There should be some logical reason behind it, or at least a good build up (even if no other character sees it) and preparation before a char becomes a serial killer.Phalynx wrote:The Surly Cantrian wrote: Don't just start that way from the off, these things take time to develop. They do if you want to get away with it for more than an hour or so...
In my opinion.

Yes, I agree that if one would like to go about murdering people, it should be at least a decent RP purpose to it. After all, this is not a FPS game.
So, what about stealing. How is it possible to know if a character stole some item, in order to go after him?
Just to clarify, by my questions one might think I only want to play deviant characters. I am merely curious about how the game work this things out. Honestly!

Well most towns have different laws. Some towns don't have laws at all, just some oppressive guards running the place who make up rules as they go along.
It's a good idea to read the laws of a town first before doing anything so you know that what is right and what is wrong.
You shouldn't feel bad about attacking chars though, if it's in your character's nature then it must be done! Same with stealing.
I can't tell you much about how to get away with stealing as it would be a CRB, you just have to observe others actions and try things yourself, learning from experience.

It's quite simple, if you leave an item in your house without locking the door and someone goes in, and after that the item is not there anymore, the person must've stolen it. Unless it's a very sleepy town, there's no chance two unauthorised people could visit a building without someone popping in between them to check what's still present.
Usually if someone (especially a stranger or a newspawn) enters a building without explaining why, he or she is suspected of stealing even if no one knew what (if anything) was in the building. Even worse if the person entered several buildings, now that calls for sabring first and asking questions later, if the person survived through the sabring.
Building owners have an advantage, they can claim that there was something when there was in fact nothing. But if the thief is weight-tested by giving him or her 15 kilos of something, that means the person can't be holding anything secret (exept notes and clothes).
Also bigger objects can be seen on the character description page.
If a young person is holding a lot of stuff, it's most likely that they were stolen. Everyone is spawned with no possessions, thus stories of "I got them from my parents" only mark the person as a lunatic. Also "I worked for them in the other town" might not work if the value of the objects is clearly higher than any work the person might have done in such a short time (--- save for prostitution).

Also never underestimate the eagerness of an entire town to stop what they are doing to chase a thief that took 10 grams of "garbage" just to dole out some mob justice.

When it's a boring town, if you're in the least bit awake, you'll seise even the tiniest bit of action available, no matter what it is. In fact, I've had the most fun lately with frisking two prisoners and threatening them. Unfortunately they were cooperative, so I won't be getting any more target practice.
