What, you can eat feces? Eww! The shaft wasn't used on anything, I thought it could possibly be used as a handle for a pick but either that doesn't work or you'd need some tool to assemble it that I don't have.

Ancient roman's used to use a sponge on a stick as an equivalent to our modern toilet paper...

FTO's got it all. Brutal.

I play dwarf fortress a lot. It's pretty dissimilar to cantr, but it does have the same steep learning curve, high amount of time dedication and large payoff if you learn to get around the completely obtuse UI. It's basically an ASCII top-down (but 3d :O) city building game, but that's only the basic description of a really complex game. It takes a lot of creativity to make a lot of really crazy devices and traps.
Original game can be found at www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
A lot of people use a tileset, which will speed up learning because things will make more sense, one good one can be found here: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm
A wiki can be found here: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page

I'll try Dwarf Fortress now. I hope it won't get boring as soon as Wurm did.

Materia Magica

Postby Rob Maule » Fri Apr 03, 2009 4:30 pm

Perhaps similar to Hollow (I haven't played it yet) is Materia Magica. It's a text-based MUD. I think it's very similar to Cantr, in that you have to eat, can travel, and everything is presented in text. It's a massive world. But it is about leveling and improving your stats. I always think of it when I think of Cantr.

I was just thinking it's great that FTO has so many manufacturable items and the system is so simple, you just click a button to start a project and start working on it automatically. It only shows items that can be manufactured from the resources on the ground and only shows the start button if you have the right tool equipped (or no tool is required). It's impossible to start a project you weren't capable to finish (unless your tool gets worn out in the middle but then it's usually easy enough to make a new one). It's a bit frustrating sometimes seeing things on the list and not being able to figure out which tool you need to make them but it tends to be logical. Since everybody is related, there is a good community spirit and people generally help each other although sometimes they might eat the food someone made and not make more to replace it.

Alter Ego is in a way similar that you can live a full life, but the choices are somewhat limited since it's a single-player game. There are common experiences like taking your first steps, being afraid of bogeymen and letting a salesman in while your mom is in the bathtub and less common things like getting food poisoning, accidentally hurting yourself with an iron or getting killed by a pedophile. (And those are just during the first stages of life, if you survive to adulthood then you can live up to old age.)

Spoilers to avoid almost certain death:
(Don't read if you want to figure it out on your own.)
In the even where your dad leaves the hot iron on the board, you can get hurt whether or not you touch it. I haven't died from either option but it seemed it could have gone worse each time.
If a man asks you to come into his car, run as soon as you're able, don't talk to him. There's a random chance of staying alive if you're abducted but I think in most cases you end up dead.
In old age, don't join the softball team (men) or go shopping (women), you'll just end up having a heart attack. There might be some random chance or combination that lets you stay alive but it's not something logical, you can even die with 100 physical while playing a catcher (although it's a rather pleasant way to die).

One of my characters ended up being a very troubled teenager, he was constantly having issues with his parents even though he tried his best to improve their relationship. He started a rock band with his fellows, he was the drummer and even though he wasn't the leader of the group, he still gained more attention than he would have suspected. One of his friends tried to commit suicide by jumping off a roof, I think he talked about going to be with the famous rock stars. Then he became hesitant but he fell anyway and my character couldn't save him. My character was going to college but made a girl pregnant, he wasn't even sure if he wanted a serious relationship with her and he was like oh no, now we're so screwed! But he thought "I'm gonna be a better father than my parents ever were to me." He named his daughter Therese. He was rather out of shape and had lately gained 11 pounds but he still participated a three-legged race with his daughter. They didn't win but she was still convinced that he's the best father in the world. (That almost made me cry.) He never managed to fix the relationship with his parents, but getting along with his wife and daughter made things more balanced, he grew up to be quite patient and gentle when in his youth those scores had been 1-10 out of 100. He also finished college as an adult and moved from being a trucker's helper to a teacher, got hired on first try. Then he went on some boat trip and a boy fell into the water. He knew he was out of shape and would probably get a heart attack or otherwise fail if he jumped in to save him, so he tried to look for help, but he was too slow and the boy drowned. This reminded him of not being able to save his friend earlier, but he handled it pretty well. In one point he had an ulcer, but he put great effort into doing as the doctor told him and that made him better. But later he developed a nervous tick and people started looking at him like he was some sort of a freak. He grew rather fond of his wife even though it had started out as a casual relationship. In his old age they were voted the couple of the year. He joined a senior's softball team to try raise his health, but suffered a heart attack in the game and died. But I think he did catch the ball. :)
