I haven't read the whole thread, just a few posts above ... but, do I understand it right that lowering shields is good for combat but bad for animals? What if we reduce the animal attack force by an extent similar to the shield lowering, but leave the shields as is?

The only reason I supported the shield lowering is because, as I think the Industrialist or otherwise the Sociologist already pointed out, the violence system was becoming so hard that we could only play a peaceful Cantr :) ... That can hardly be the intention ;)

That would appease me personally...

Yes, I think that would be a good compromise. :)

Sounds logical. Though I'm not sure that the 'peaceful cantr' problem is an effect of the game rules so much as the (OOC, in my opinion) social dynamics.
Tiredness actually favored a war of aggression, in my opinion, at least until it was gutted. It probably helps a defender a little bit now, but I wouldn't expect it to matter so much. And the skill issue is easier for an attacker to cope with than a defender.

I hope I've been saying that, anyway...

BIG EDIT:
May have missed this, Jos:

Yeah, this is real good isn't it. I have NO form of protection with the highest valued shield around.

Unless the characters in question are exhausted and/or near death, I hope this isn't the intended function...

But in general the more I think about the less effective blocking in combat, the more I like it as a concept.

It's five characters.

And they are all full strength and 0% tired.

EDIT: Except one, who is slightly damaged.

The shield change would not encourage conflict. Not at all... this is entirely an IC problem. As somebody said, nobody wants to start conflicts.

The shield change really wouldn't change anything.

Patience, Jos. I've heard rumblings of war-to-come on this forum. And one of my characters knows of something in the offing, but it takes a long time to prepare for a realistic assault, doesn't it?

If you really want fighting to be more more effective, you should increase characyters' attack values. I don't know if that's a good thing or not, but that clearly makes more sense than lowering defence all-round.

So, when , oh when, is healing going to get easier? Characters might be more willing to risk getting injured if it didn't take years and years to recover. That kinda limits things, too, doesn't it? A belligerent character is forced to take it easy for a very long time inbetween assaults., if somebody manages to hit him back. Not only that, but it costs him all his productivity during that time. Not only is production slowed down, but he's forced to put all hisefforts into gathering these grossly inefficient healing foods. (It might be nice if some of the less arduous jobs such as sewing could be done just as easily by injured people, BTW)

NO!

You realise that people who are good at combat already do plenty of damage?

It just depends on your character. I have a char who's been a soldier for thirty-five years who barely does 14 with his sabre to an unarmed man, while I have a much younger girl who did mid-twenties-range damage to someone with an iron shield, with an inferior weapon. Them's breaks, I guess.

The shield change may not have much impact on major conflicts, but it could be a huge difference to lower-intensity things. Banditry, say. Making your victim drop a little faster could be all the difference between success and being massacred.
