Romans? Democracy?

You are kidding me, right?

Commonly held belief is that Greece is the home of democracy.
Fairly accurate comment, although not infallible. However, by modern 'standards' and perceptions of democracy, the Greeks were no better than the Romans...

The Greeks are regarded as the birthplace of democracy, although an Iroquois tribe whose name eludes me had set up a much more efficent and inclusive one a long time before (but, to be fair, George Washington didn't know that)
No. For six hundred years, actually.
We're only envious because we can't thaw out our beer. Not that it matters that you can. Yours is so weak, sometimes I wonder weather you guys are just pretending to get waisted to fit in with us.
Now, don't get all PMS on us, it's only a joke. See? We have a wink. The wink cleanses all, including my spelling errors and insults.
Wink is there, therefore, no bad blood. The wink is all cleansing.
All has been cleansed.

Sorry, what? You think that quoting a number (600 years in this instance) negates the truth?
Romans really weren't democratic... oh they had elections, but what they had was rule by a group, a social strata. That is not democracy. I've studied this extensively... randomly throwing a number at me is not going to negate my studying.
The Romans were not democratic. At least not democratic by the modern definition, and if you are going to compare America to it you should use the same definitions. You can choose not to believe me if you want... but I stand by that statement.
By all means attempt to disprove me, Schme. If you can bring out evidence to support your statement, well and good. If not, then accept what I say. Put up or shut up, as they say.

America is essentially the same system, as is Canada, as is England, as is France, as is Germany, as is Australia, as Japan, and the list goes on and on.
Think about it. In Canada and America, does someone who is not from a rich and well connected family have ANY chance of getting high up in national politics? Hell no. Same with Rome. The only difference is that in Rome, there were laws regarding it, wheareas here, it is just astronomically difficult. But it's the same thing. Same guys running the country.
Hell, George Bush and John Kerry both went to Yale at the same time, and were in the Skull and Bones Club at the same time. Same guys. Ruling clique.
So, if Rome wasn't democratic, than neither is the states, or Canada for that matter.

Thats a joke, anyone can become succesfull in politics, because it's early and i'm grumpy i'll give an example bound to cause an argument... Adolf Hitler was a tramp on the streets of vienna following the first world war, he rose up to become one of the most powerfull men in the world before acting like an idiot and spoiling it all. and before you say that he doesent count, 'cos he was a totalitarian dictator, remember that he was elected legally through the democratic system of germany... it's abit of an extreme example i know.. But like i said i just woke up and aint thinking straight...

Abraham Lincoln. Frederick Douglass. Harry S. Truman. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bob Dole.
Those are just a few off the top of my head...I tried to stay away for what, like a week and this crap is still going on?

It's never going to end, Witchita. If you don't think it interesting or a good use of your time, don't bother.
I don't think it either of these things, it's just that I'm a loser and I've been sick all week.

Yes, yes, there is always the people's champion. But that only works in certain situations. The Germany that Germany was at the time was totally, for lack of a better word, fucked. Nobody had jobs, the politicians got nothing done, the foreigners kept screwing them over, there was an elections practically every couple of weeks.
But in America, (and Canada) that cannot happen, due to the arrangement. It's not like Germany in that time. The situation does not allow for any people's champions (unless Michael Moore's gonna go try to become El Presedente,((I'm only joking)) )
Nobody would support the people's champion type politician, and the big shots aren't scattered enough not to be able to get together to take him down.
For example, Mexico's. Did the sadanista's go anywhere? No. They've been negotiating for like seven years, and if the negoations ever break down (which the government does not want, because they would prefer it continues forever) the government would start negotiating with the army. Now, Mexico is hardly the perfect democracy poster boy, but all the same.
Also, look at Rome. There was the gladiator revolt. Did alot of damage, but the nobles eventually wiped them out.
And as for all the from poor families president, yah, sure, that's they're image, they use it to show solidarity and all that, but they didn't become powerfull until they stopped being poor and go connected.
Poor people can become powerfull. But not in Canada and America.
Sorry, this is a bit badly put together. I'm not really feeling well today.
