Here's my take on it, pulled partially from my MUDding days:

You can kidnap and enslave people, or even imprison people for long periods of time, and that's perfectly legitimate. It is also legitimate, however, that the player of that character will not want to play in that sort of situation, and if they're dead set against playing in that sort of situation, you shouldn't force them. In that case, kill their character and allow them to play something else. (Obviously, letting them go isn't an option - that is allowing OOC to influence IC to their favor, which will enforce negative OOC behavior in the future.)

Being an entertaining pirate is all fine and nice but kill them if they bitch at you in {OOC:You're an asshole for disrupting my roleplay in my sleepy town!}. You're not obligated, and there is leeway, is what I'm saying.

I feel like you might just be speaking from a lack of experience here. I've played a slave and there were other characters in the same situation with them as well. It's not as uncommon as you think, it's more that escaping and being able to spread the story is rare. In the end you might as well argue that no criminal would ever agree to keep playing once they're caught and taken prisoner.

Hmmm, good to know. Thanks for the insight.

Being a prisoner is a nice idea. I've only had on character locked up and that was when I very first started. I really didnt seem to mind it as the charrie was given projects to work on. A prison setting would be nice with other prisoners to interact wtih even though you were all locked up. Maybe I'll make a "bad guy" for the sole purpose of getting locked up if I can get over that fear of wasting a character by having them locked up and starved to death because town leaders forgot to feed.

In a way I can see the appeal of the idea, and it's something I might risk with a younger char, but never with a more established one unless I knew the people and trusted them to be reliable, for the reason you posted there. People think waiting on a sleepy leader to lend them a tool is bad, waiting on them to bring you a meal would be 1000x worse.

Of course I haven't had anyone actually arrested since the days before open windows, it's probably a lot less risky being a prisoner now as long as the people locking you up aren't psychos.

That's one thing I never understood - why not just have a giant pile of raw foods (cheap) sitting in the town cells? Solves that problem altogether. :D

I've never seen a prison with open windows, and every time a character has been locked up they've be promptly ignored till they either starve to death or their sentence is up. You may have to try with multiple characters.

Twice I've successfully negotiated a community sentence term prior to surrendering. The one I remember the details of was with my first account. Five people on the road (funny how that sleepy town came instantly awake...), all their attacks used up, and all of us on foot, meaning they were very happy to make the deal to avoid wasting another day.

And there were a couple of other times I'd managed to talk my way into it after the fact, but if you let your char get locked up it's always pretty much a dice toss whether they live or die or just get left to slowly wither away. That's why I prefer to try and get a good sense of a town before any of mine try anything these days. Really though I don't understand why anyone would bother even taking a prisoner if they're just going to ignore them, the smug lecturing of a literal captive audience is half the point.

I'd like to play an optician and roleplay it really well, with loads of lenses in boxes. I wouldn't come across someone who needed glasses very often but when I did it would be awesome. They'd also love herbal tea.

Another idea, someone who develops a martial art. I don't know enough about martial arts so I haven't really been able to pull it off yet. I have a character who secretly wants a dojo but will probably conform to the local fashion. I don't see kung fu working in a greatkilt.

A childlike character who collects custom designed stuffed animals and has a bedroom with a cute quilt that they all sit on and have tea parties when I have guests.

Once, I got talking to some weedy little newspawn who told me that he didn't have an idea yet but when he did I'd know about it. I doubted him. Then I knew about it, became really involved in it but went inactive a few ingame years later when real life insisted I take a break. Now the whole playerbase knows about it and I have so much regret for not logging in to say a word or two so I'd continue to be fed during the few months that followed. It's selfish, but what I'd love most is another opportunity to become the right hand man of a character whose roleplay is a lot better than mine. It's how I improve and it's inspiring.

I regret not finding the game when it first started with no buildings no maps no roads etc.

Due to this I often wonder what it would be like to have a private server of the game with just my character starting from truly nothing. Furthermore ecause of this I've always entertained the idea of having a "society blind" character but I wonder if it would work. Ignore all people and just do what I'd want as if there were no people, no buildings etc as above would do. I doubt it would work thought because eventually i'd end up breaking a law by gathering without permission making a building when the town people didnt want one or if nothing else some ruthless character would just kill mine because they could :).

Maybe next time I spawn on[Massive Unnamed Wilderness] I'll try this since there's enough open space there that I can just walk away into the wilderness and do my own thing.

I would like to play an inventor. Fooling around with weird things and eventually coming up with something (useful!) the world has never seen before. Like a toothbrush. Or a crow's nest.
I think ...

You don't have to wait to for one to spawn, if you have anybody now with leanings toward being a back to nature wilderness survival nut, just sail there the regular way, strip down naked and leave the raker open with the key inside, and walk off into the wilderness.

If only this were RL, your char could get a reality show and drink their own pee and stuff.

Fu isn't the only undeveloped area, either. There's plenty of islands out there with nothing or next to nothing.

Just to avoid disaster, avoid naming these islands or regions please. This is against the rules.

And from now we should perhaps just refer to [CENSORED] as Massive Unnamed Wilderness.
