I disagree with the statement that this by-passes the combat skill. This enriches the system. Now we have finesse weaponry whose maximum potential is reached in the hands of a skilled expert, and we also have basic weaponry that is most powerful in the hands of a brute. Thag hit Not Nale!!!

I don't think this is going to be horribly complicated. If you have high skill, pick a high skill weapon. If you have a high strength pick a high strength (low skill) weapon. Is that strategy too difficult?

Coincidentally, the settings and weapon selections will hopefully favor the development of archers vs. melee soldiers.

There will still be some people who are useless with weapons, but they would have to be both weak and have a low combat skill.

This is a lot less people than before.

Now, more characters are likely to be good either in strength or combat skill, and so most characters are likely to be good, or at least average with some form of weapon.

The combat skill system before had a great divide between those who were good with weapons, and those who weren't. It was a fairly even spread between the extreme of deadly and useless.

Now, there will still be the extremes of combat damage, but the distribution will not be even. It will be bunched up around the average area. Thus reducing the good/bad fighter divide which created interest before.

Almost all characters are likely to be 'average' in their combat, using either skill based or strength based weapons.

According to that, no one's going to be satisfied, but I don't think getting rid of skills will satisfy everyone either. Cantr's trying out something different. There have been a few wars lately...

HF, the idea was to give you incentive to choose your weapons carefully and to make use of the diversity available. I don't think the overall effect towards normalisation of abilities will be that extreme.

HF, you're right to some extent. Perhaps not as dramatic as you suggest, but it's definitely the way it moves in. I have the same fear a bit ... but I think it'll all be much less dramatic and also lead to more interesting weapon production.

I found it a little awkward that the deity in the Cantr world talks normally in the forum, like every word he says is important.

He's not the deity. In the past some cultures have said there was a God named Jos but that's frowned upon as it's hardly a name they would have come up with naturally :-P

That being said, he is the game's creator. So most of the words are important. I guess. I think. Maybe.

Of course my words are important! ;) Majorly so! ;)

No deity, though ... Mortal as all of you ;) ...

Oh, and although my words might be important, I often change opinion / I have a bad memory so I remember things wrong / I often forget hugely important details / I can get pointlessly defensive / etc. ... oh, and I have a tendency of saying the opposite of what I think when it sounds funny (in my opinion) .... so, yeah, well, don't take me *too* seriously ;) ...

Jos, just accept the fact that some electronic signals across the internet fancy you as a god :P Any who, I've heard of religious insights that would make no real sense in Cantr.

I like the new weapon system though. It constricts open roleplaying abit because its hard to be a Knight if your really weak, and your required to wield a Claymore. I also have a grudge cause it effected all my present characters, but I think in the long term it can REALLY help the game along in terms of war and peace. I mean, if you just happen to recruit an army of really strong Knights, and your invade a normal town, your pretty well set. It will add, just maybe, a social structure that isn't just made up, but actually depicted by how your character comes across.

I just hope that the statis of age dissappears and the strength of a person comes more into play. This is so because back in the day of swords, the biggest, strongest person was leader unless they had a wicked tongue.

Personally this change does effect at least one of my charies a lot who just so happens to have made himself a claymore shortly before this system got sugested. He's a weak skillful fighter, so I'm probaly going to have to get him swaped over to a crossbow if ever want to see him do any real dammage; however, it does entirely change how some of my other charies will likely progress in ways that I think will be fun. That said I compleatly agree with you on the "it screws me, but I like it anyway" stance.

However, I think your idea of strongest = leader as a good thing is pretty erronious. 1st off, if strength were to become a more important atribute for a leader, then, we'd have a lot more discontent newspawns when they find out they aren't strong which would screw up the game. As for the "the biggest, strongest person was leader" comment, I think I should remind you that in the age of swords as you call it, almost all leadership possitions were hereditary. Leadership is in game as it is in real life, it takes smarts, conections, wealth, and some exploitable oppotunity to sieze it from the people who were in power before you. In some cases, the last part may incorporate raw strength, but ussaully using meer comabtive prowess to to adavance will only get you locked up or killed. The reason power usally lies with the old is b/c they've had the longest to build wealth and connections, and most exploitable oppertunities take patience.

And everyone should remember the other aspects of combat. Dragging is strength based, while shield use is skill based (I believe). A really good soldier must still have reasonable strength and skill.

Things like that makes Cantr funny.

About weapon diversification...weapons are fun.
