There are three St George's flags for every person in the UK (probably) and it occupies about 5 channels of TV here....

Doesn't mean we are gonna win...

Thank God!

Sorry. In America we reserved the word football for a sport where the diving isn't so effeminate and not considered cheating.

Oh, so sorry. I am an american too and the proper way here to name the sport which is the topic of this forum, it's "FOOTBALL", not "soccer".
So I think you're just wrong.

"Football" is "Football". That's what they're playing now at Germany.

ps. Please DO NOT forget that America is from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

8) (psst... It's a joke... my way of working out "soccer" angst.)

We can argue semantics, but tell 10 different people in China that you're from America and guess what nationality they'll think you are... You're right, the Americas cover a lot of ground, but let's be honest, those guys in the Eastern Hemisphere aren't gonna be thinking you're from Cordoba, y'know what I mean?

I have to side with the rest of the world here. Football is a name suited for a sport where the ball and foot make contact more often then the occasional punt and feild goal.

Now back to the world cup. Did anybody think that Ghana would advance out of their group? I'm glad to see an African team stick around after the group play, but I would have much preferd to see Ivory Coast move on from their group. I also expected to see more from Czech and U.S.A. then what they delivered.

The USA media is trying to cover for Bruce Arena by relying on what happened in 2002. The thing is that this guy accomplished zip with this team this year. The States was fielding an arguably stronger team than in the last Cup when they made it to the quarterfinals, so there's no excuse for this kind of performance. Beasely looked like a child out there and Landon Donovan didn't show up at all. Don't even get me started on Reyna...

Sidenote: I hear that he's (Reyna) retiring from international play.

Ghana deserves to go on. So does the Czech Republic perhaps, but I think Ghana played well enough to earn a spot in the next round. Have fun with Brazil, guys!

I agree, Ghana played excellently and eared that spot. I'd love to see them knock out Brazil. That would be amazing. :D

Looks like the year of the big teams. If only Czechs had gotten through over ghana (and perhaps croatia over australia). Pretty much everyone expected to get through would have done.

Turning out to be a good world cup. ...come on the England!

edit: anyone see the portugal holland game? what a laugh that was!

Well, it seem to be the time for giving the REFEREE GIFTS :?

1) Monday June 26th: Italy vs. Australia (minute 92:30) Italy had been going on with the demonstration of bad play, which had started in the match with USA. No ideas were into their pockets, but only run, shot, run again... Australia had came with humility, but with a great resistance, so it was expected, at that match time, that both teams were going to play the extra time. But... but... Juve, Lazio, Milan directives have done a great support and in the... last second of the match... a ridiculous fall by the italian player was instantly converted into a penalty kick.

2) Tuesday June 27th: Brazil vs. Ghana (minute 42) Ghana almost reach the tie, but the ball literally IMPACT goalkeeper Dida. So then start the lethal strike from Brazil, in a great and fast moving of the ball. Then it's centered by Brazil and "It's a GOAL!"... But wait... Where was Adriano when the ball was shot? half a metre in OFFSIDE? And where was the flag up from the lineman? (Oh please, just do not answer!)

It's there a nice song which describe the situations for the italians & brazilians:

Hope you like it!

It was no surprise for me. Spain haven't reached quarters since 1950.
Seems to be a Ripley's Believe it or not, but it's true.
A pity for that.

Why on earth did everyone expect the Czech Republic to progress from their group?

Their time was 2 years ago, and they are now a declining force. When your top 2 strikers are Koller and Baros...

Most overrated team... EVER!

I was, however, surprised it was Ghana and not the US. All credit to the Ghanians though...
