Yep, I'm feeling pretty damn surly today. Been feeling that way a lot lately and figured it was about time to come right out and say it. Civility doesn't seem to get any results around here anyway, and I'm getting tired of trying.

To be fair, surliness seems to get no results either. At least, I have nothing to show for over a year of surliness on this forum...

My character is 50 years old. He has been a soldier all his life, but due to random skills he only saves 12 percent with his shield. Now that would be lowered to, what, 7?

A talented person who hits high with a crossbow hits me. He does 60 damage, minus 7, so 53.

He then hits again, and does 40 due to tiredness. I don't even save 7 this time, only 4 so another 36. I'm 89 percent damaged.

He hits again, this time for 20. I don't save anything. I'm dead.

Yeah, that sounds like a great game. If I wanted that, I'd go play D&D...

I think I don't like this shield change either. (I haven't given it very long, to be sure.) But Im wondering what the purpose of this is? People are explaining they want wars and the like, but I think the lowering of protection a shield does, will make people afraid of going to war, for fear their shields wont work so good at all. (Even if I were playing a pirate right now, I'd be afraid to go into a town and rob it, becaues 1 person might be awake to hit my char which could signifigantly ruin the char in one shot....) If the protection hasn't been lowered that much, okay. But if it's drastically lowered? I don't think I care much for it.
I hate people.

My guess is that Anthony ran into a character that has a shield that he wants to kill, now he can...

Good point. One of my chracters runs a steelworks, which isn't directly directly affected by this change, thank goodness, but it does give her ample opportunity to study the affect of abrupt OOC changes. As we all know, it's a slow-moving (and vital ) industry. When you set something in motion it akes an average of 2-3 years before you see the effect. The upshot is that if somebody shifts the goalposts on you too often , you're still trying to reach the new goalposts when they suddenly decide to shift them back again, or to shift the somewhere else entirely. So you never get to reach the goalposts at all. This happens quite often enough for entirely in-game reasons (like political changes) to make the game realisticallly frusatrating. If the Programming department piles too much on top of that (as it does) then people will start feeling it's not worth trying to adapt to the changes nor plan anything in advance. All this experimentation actually works against the creation of more structured societies- which is what the Programming Department want to encourage - so they say.

BTW, I saw a sixty-year-old character with an iron shield get attacked by a boar today, and it did 14%damage to him. That's in an area where boars attack frequently and healing foods are quite scarce. I don't think many characters will make it into their sixties round there, in future, not at that rate.

BTW, I'm just kidding you Anothony...I wanted to chime in on the issue and took a lead from Surly.

But, I don't see a purpose for the change frankly. I don't believe there is a tremendous amount of violence. If the complaint is pirates then this change won't really affect that either as they attack and withdraw. I'm not sure I see any effective purpose.

There may be one, can you explain it in a little more detail?

But now you know if the boars are getting through his shield that easily then you could assassinate him and takes his stuff.

What good would it do to kill such an old character like that anyway to get his stuff that will do her no good once those boars turn on her character? Areas of cantr where animals attack frequently are completely screwed.

Yep, that's my problem with the system. The shield change, which is meant to balance combat, severely UNbalances survival rates against animals. Aki and Burgeo and other places were already hard enough, even for people with iron shields.

I think I tried to say that once...I haven't had a chance to get annoyed with this particular change yet, but give me time...

Actually, I don't particularly know whether this is a bad change for combat balance, in the abstract. I suspect it's probably well thought out, in that narrow field. Sounds like no one will ever know, since combat equipment balance is seldom, if ever, tested in the world that makes the claim "There are no dangerous weapons, only dangerous people" seem very true.

It seems like an obvious mistake with respect to animals and healing. Animals dish out a lot of hurt to anyone not a strong blocker (worse now), and there's no natural healing (WHY?!), only scattered and often weak healing foods.
