I think there was one in Germany but it was more cathedral like. I also believe it was destroyed in another war.
Yes, you are correct that there always have been mercenaries but that is where the term 'mecenary' and 'soldier of fortune' came to be. Most soldiers that fought the Thirty Years War were mercenaries and weren't usually all that loyal to the cause they were fighting for and were really there for the money, pillaging, wealth, etc... That and you were fed, clothed, and armed. That is why it is a religious war while at the same time it isn't due to that fact that a Protestant Lord would hire Catholic mercenaries to fight for his cause and the Catholic mercenaries would do it as long as the money was right. It is a very interesting period of time.

I spent many years making a cotton gin, spindle, twiner, needle, knitting needles, scissors, and making a lot of cotton cloth and cotton rope... Ima bit disappointed that making clothes has nothing to do with these things.
On a side note, I made a hemp tunic yesterday, but today the only option I am given is to make a loin cloth

Yea, what's the deal with that anyway? (not that I have anything against a loin cloth

When people tell me that great minds think alike, all I can do is look at them and think "oh you dirty, dirty bastard"

Solifus could answer more directly but I do not belive your efforts where in vain. Your cotton cloth will simply be better. Second only to silk logically. I am assuming that all existing garments will be revisted once things get worked out. And you would have the largest supply of these things on hand.
Someday if object detoration is added, wheather effects on chracters is added, and the combat system is modfied again your products would loigcally be better. (We'll just have to keep reminding them of the benifits of cotton. Swishing a sabre in a ten year old wet wool shirt and pants does not sound like a good time}.

All clothing except for loin cloths, which are simple to make, and would be prolific anyway, have been stopped from being manufacturable, until we can sort out the bugs related to manufacturing them.
About the machines, don't start being disapointed right now

Maybe this should be moved to Bug Reports, but its got to do with clothes. And dont worry, I know, I know, clothes are a work in progress and we need to iron out the bugs...
... but when my character wearing a fur cloak looks at anyone, they are wearing a fur coat.

I know my fashion sense is extremely incredible and all, but does everyone single person in town have to copy my look?

Exploited the bug?
Exploiting a bug is when you find something wrong in the game and use it to your advantage, like pulling 10000000000 steal out of thin air... not for making clothes because its an option offered.

Exploited the bug? Thats a bit of a harsh phrase to describe someone who saw a clothing option, had needle ready and materials on hand, and made clothing.
There was a little bug...you could make what without the resources. I missed it though, and am still naked. But, fur bikini here I come...
