I just imagine buildings without locks as having no door in the first place, just an opening to the outside world.

But then, if an unlocked building has no door... then how can we knock on it?

That's how I always picture it to. And I always picture an unlocked door as just open...it would be nice if you could still get a few messages back and forth from outside through it that way, and lock it if you wanted total privacy.
