I agree with you Nick, in that increase in skills through actually doing the activity involved is the best option, and although I would like to be able to see a noticable change in my hunting skills if my character was to hunt every day for ten years, how I understand how skills are passed on to newspawns, there would have to be some changes made before the skill growth could become significant, or else we would be again faced with a growing imbalance. Or I could be entirely wrong with the way skills improve, or how they are passed on to new characters, I don't really grasp the inner working very well, nor do I think most of the other players do (obviously excepting the programmers who helped code said segments).

I wrote:Skills, now thats a different matter. But I believe it could be solved with a "practice with a weapon" project. Then we can have professional soldiers... who will be more powerful, but are dependent on others, as they need to train every day.
Nick wrote:From what I can gather, there is not much improvement made with training, at all.
In fact, I've noticed that your skills slide faster than you can improve them, in some cases. Could be wrong though.
Talapus wrote:Ahh, that is where are mix up was. You see, I was refering to Surly's proposed ""practice with a weapon" project" as far as increases in damage and such go, not the current improvement/decrease in skills that we have been seeing from steady use.
Let me clarify my point…
I never suggested that practice would increase damage in the way you suggest. The practice project was an idea based entirely on the horribly skewed current system which, as Nick correctly points out, has your skills slide a lot faster than they can be improved. For instance I had a character that could do 40 damage with a sbare. Now he does 15. This would be the result of him not having used it too much, as he has been digging stone for several years. Yet he is no better at digging stone, so basically that character has been skewed.
The idea of training was that it would negate any slide in combat ability. Someone who trains every day (or at least 10 days a year) should do the maximum damage with that weapon. I know there are characters who can do over 60 damage with a crossbow, and that is just wrong. Under my proposed training project, it would be possible for your character to become a master crossbowman – with the maximum damage a crossbow can do (which should be no more than 50)
I do think a training project would be a better idea. I do acknowledge that you can learn by direct experience… but do you really think that soldiers are given a weapon and shoved onto the battlefield with the command ‘learn while you fight’? No, they train. And if a character trains every day he will be better than someone who doesn’tNick wrote:I rather like how training is now (maybe not mathematically, but at least HOW it works)
I think changing it to a project would not be a good idea.

Who says you can only train on enemies in the current system?

Heh, I think that's what the programmers intended.
But as you pointed out, that does not seem to be occuring.
Can't do that anyway.
You'd have to repair your weapon quite often, and in doing that you wouldn't be able to hunt.

Maybe with more than one weapon...
Anyway, I know there are other ways. But IMO you either need a large amount of healing foods, or it should be a CR breach (if you are proposing what I think you are...)
