The ultimate game tool would be a Flash or Java applet that allows you to use any image as a game board and multiply smaller images to be used as game pieces. The game pieces could be moved anywhere on the game board and also removed from it (in which case they would go to the character's inventory) and introduced on any other game board the player has access to.

Maybe there could be objects called game pieces and they could be made out of different materials such as wood, bone, stone, tusk or marble and the tool(s) used in creation would be defined by the material. You would also select an uploaded image to represent the item. Images could not be changed afterwards so each piece would be like an uneditable note, but it would have a small weight and you could produce copies with the right tool(s) and resources, just like with keys. Game boards would be created in a similar fashion but they probably wouldn't require a copy button. (If someone did want to copy a game board, they could just view source to find out the file name and use that.)

When someone uses a game board, it would detect all the game pieces in the character's inventory and the character would have the option to move the pieces onto the board. Other people could also add and remove pieces if they had access to the board (most likely it would only be usable on the ground). If someone picks up the board, the pieces on it will remain stationary. The game would keep track of the position of each game piece on the board. But a more trickier thing would be how to track the movement in real time so that if two players were viewing the same applet, they could see each other's moves.

Oh please god no images/flash/java in a text based game.. I couldn't think of anything worse.

If you want to play board games, there are a multitude of free ones on the web already, is this _really_ needed in cantr because sailors are getting bored?!

That would be briliant!

You could also make the 'chess-playing' a project, with a maximum of 2 players. And then the wholde java things (which is not really my source of interest  )
Welke sadist kwam er op het idee om een "s" in het woord slissen te zetten?

Yes it is ^^
And it will promote the game of chess and get people to actually think, while playing cantr!

Roleplaying requires thinking...

To take a different road: It's also a new role-playing challange!
You can be very good at chess, while your character isn't :)
Or the other way around! (oh wait, that won't work :P )

1) Requiring people to possibly download a plugin to use a game feature would be completely against the ideas of Cantr. I'm quite sure some people play Cantr because it has low system requirements.

2) If such a system were to be implemented, it would be better to do it using AJAX, if at all.

I'm pretty sure nobody with the power to implement this would be stupid enough to put RL games into Cantr...
