Weddings are rather problematic in Cantr since it's difficult enough to find a time when the bride and groom are awake at the same time (been there) but if you include other people as well then it's likely to take several hours. I think if you really want to make grand plans, it's better to discuss the timing using real life times and dates even though it's OOC, since if you just say "I'm awake during hour X and Y and the beginning of Z", that's a bit too vague. If participants are from different timezones then it might be worth while to make a ceremony where each participant pretty much only speaks once and the turns will rotate in the order of when the people are online.

In my previous post I mentioned having two characters who've gotten married, those were Bessie and Kenneth (who killed himself with a sword after his wife died of starvation while sleeping). I think I've had two other characters get married since then.

One was supposed to be a big party with a banquet table but the bride slept through it all so it had to be canceled. Later they happened to be awake at the same time and had an improvised quick wedding, just changed their clothes and went outside to exchange vows. None of the guests were awake until hours later. She got sleeping sickness during their honeymoon but managed to survive for several years although it made the other party bitter and mentally unstable. She (it was a lesbian marriage) was actually relieved when her wife finally died so she never had to confess to her that she'd cheated on her while she slept. But she kept her body stored in their room with flowers scattered around it, and only when two newspawns had desecrated the corpse on separate occasion she came to accept that dead people are better off underground.

My other character just introduced his girlfriend as his wife in some point and she accepted it just like that, never complained about not having a wedding. In the beginning she was still using her own last name but when he called her by his last name then she adopted that too. What a wonderfully flexible character.

Then I have a third one who's planning to get married but I wonder how it'll turn out. Neither of the parties have never seen a wedding but OOC tradition is drawn in. I don't mind, sometimes you just have to assume characters have an instinct of how things ought to be done.

In real life women were considered property of their fathers (or other male relatives if the father died) so they would have to be bought. Then again if women are seen as less valuable than men, the bride's family may have paid the groom's family for taking the girl under their wing. But in Cantr there are no families (save for a few exceptions, but none through biology) so nobody owns people. Except maybe towns... I'd like to see a system in which the bride and groom pay the town for each other (since they're likely to be less productive when they'll be off spending some private time). It could also be interesting to have arranged marriages and see how that turns out.

One done (disturbingly traditional but over quickly so I didn't have to gag too much..phew), one informal (just calling each other that - tbh much more commitment involved that one) and one happening soon involving an in-game religion..

At least it provides a bit of insight into that players' attitude about bringing OOC traditions and such in-game.. and it sure beats talking about gathering potatoes all day. Meh.

You already told about that on page 1 (DylPickle). Crazy Cantrians... Although at least it's an original tradition. Did you actually hit or just RP it, and what if one would have missed? It would have looked like the person dodged and wasn't ready to make a commitment.

There was an arranged marriage way back in the day..like 1300's? But I can't for the life of me remember.. One group married off a girl to a town leader or something...

I recently wondered why I've never tried to forge an alliance through marriage, but then I remembered I never pursue cantr relationships anymore. Unless they sign a clause saying they won't be overly clingy and won't try to force cybersex down my throat.

No joke. I'd sign a pre-nup. Or rather, I'd make some of the crazy women I have to deal with sign them. Dyl, I agree with your clingy-clause. Introduce it, Man!

I like my one charri's fiance. She was feeling sad so she injured herself...he comes in is like "what happened?" and shes like "oh it was an accident" he's like ok, and leaves.

We need more people like that to get married to.
