Male and Female doesn't matter for procreation? Why the hell do we need to keep them then? Let's delete the option altogether during the character generation process if we are going to push for absolute asexuality? What's the difference between a female in her twenties and a male in his twenties? Two letters and a fucking pronoun, that's all! It will save us database space on every character, trim out a shitload of translation issues.... :| Sometimes I wonder if we have all lost our damned minds.

I can handle the random selection and removing the social/moral/marriage component from it, but I am not willing to sacrifice that much reality. I don't see too many spots in game where it is going to kill all spawning do to female/male availability.

The mechanics of it all are great. I'm just sick of this becoming a fucking gender/sex/hermaphroditic equality debate every time it comes up. And I am sure that makes me one of the crazy ones...

It's that can of worms that can be avoided if only a single parent is known.

If two people donate genes, both people should be known, or not known. Not just one.

notsure :?

Yes. That would fix it, I would think. A bit klugey, but it would avoid turning rational thought on its head. :D

Just anything but "Your parents are..." two males or two females. That is just going to be fundamentally daft.

Poll?

I vote for a two parents, different gender, no explicit sex needed (even if the "having sex" is implemented) system.

Gee, I guess you're right. The only reason to build a house is so your char can cyber in it and the only reason to have two different genders in Cantr is so they can pretend to screw and then have a baby. What were we thinking?

Whether or not they have sex, Cantrian do not presently procreate and this thread is suggesting that this remains the same. It is only suggesting that each newspawn would have two relatives from whom they derive traits exactly as they do now except that this information would be made known. It is not suggesting that those relatives are the newspawns parents.

I can't believe people are getting their panties in such a wad over this.

True, but - by my suggestion - the new characters would spawn as usual. The only difference is that their spawn location and genes would be based on their parents, and they'd know who their parents are. Two charries in a sexual relationship would become a kind of spawn-location.

If you have another suggestion, please make another topic.

This suggestion's worth is based on the fact that it requires virtually no work from the Programming Department to implement. If you have another suggestion on how children should be implemented, it deserves to be in another topic.

Nick, I think your thread title may be confusing the issue. Perhaps you can change it to something that doesn't involve the word "children."

*shrugs* Okay. I figured it was close enough in theme to not warrant it's own thread, but, sure, I could start a new one.

:)

This is a great idea. Why do we need to announce the father? Just say so and so has been born and his/her mother/father is -------. Then we have no problems. Then it becomes an in game decision to raise the child with two parents or not, or whether you even want to raise the child at all.

Because this thread is not about Cantrians having children or being a parent! :D Hi, Racetyme, I'm kinvoya. Welcome back.

They are not a mother and father. They're something else. They're gene sources, nothing more.

Imagine if you didn't support the idea but the loud majority of your community did, then one day a newspawn would get your genes in the lottery and the community would demand that you take care of this newspawn, even though you had no way of affecting it (exept maybe by staying indoors at all times).

Though back in the stone age, people didn't know where babies come from, it was a natural event that all healthy women of age became pregnant and gave birth in the spring, just like animals do. Most of those children died, and they were taken to special altars in the forest and their spirits were worshipped. This sounds a bit like it.

Since no one bothers to code this thing with the complexity it would demand, I think we should just leave things how they are. Maybe there will be another Cantr one day, for people who want to start off their characters as children and who are not afraid of the word sex. Until then, just forget about the whole thing. Go adopt.

In real life we call them deadbeat dads. It wouldn't be unique to Cantr society. And this definately will not be the social climate; as reproduction will happen so obviously randomly, there will be no bad stigma associated with having a child with someone you don't like, for instance, because everybody knows it's random.
