Mind = Brain or Mind ≠ Brain

Philosophers have been debating this for thousands of years... it goes to the heart of most religions as well... there are many schools of thought on this... websters dictionary can't really settle the question... for it is just based on one of the many schools of thought.

Well, I certainly see where you're coming from. Personally I believe that your entire personality and thought and memory are all processed and controlled by the physical brain. We are just very complex machines. No spirit or soul or anything like that intervenes. The loose end with this theory is consciousness. I've yet to come up with a satisfactory explanation for that.

But even if you believe, like I do, that mind and brain are inseperable, their meanings are still different. It's like the difference between "story" and "book". Sometimes they are used interchangibly, but one refers to the concept and the other to the physical object, or medium if you will. Ofter "brain" can be used in place of "mind", since it can refer to the whole thing (the object and its function) so that it encompasses mind, but "mind" cannot be used to refer to the physical object.

There are different levels to the brain.

The base level is automic funtion.
Layered above this is stimulous response.
Layered above this is instinct.
Layered above this is the various levels of intelligence.
Emotions are a perception of the interaction between instincts and intelligence.

There is a lot of different parts to intelligence.
My favorite part is the anicolic nebulea (sp?}. It's only job is to give out a contants "true" signal. Since the brain is an anolog system the development of the concept of "true" is significant. The rest of it is different levels of "is this enough like that". Without the pinnicale "true" concept to point to the system doesn't work.

There are lots of structures for differnt things.

Then there has to be room for the abstracts.

Some are inate and some have to be learned.

Consciousness is an abstract concept that you and the rest of the world is two different things. This is inate.

Time awarness is the abstract concept that there is seperate past, present, and future. This is more than learning past stimulous responses to better effect future outcomes. It is an understanding that the past is gone the future is unset and the things can be different the next time even if nothing is done differently. This is inate.

Enlightenment is the abstract concept that you and the rest of the world are the same thing. This is learned.

Faith is the abstract that there is something that actaully cares about all this. This is learned.

Anything that is learned can be learned differently. A lack of Enlightenment or Faith which athesits refer to as reality.

Then there are tons and tons of other learned abstracts like math. Math exist without us but math to us is just another abstract.

Some would say that all abstracts are an improvement of the visualation process but I don't belive that. I have known smart people who can't visualize very well at all. I just think the abstract part of the brain connects better with other part of the brain differently for different people.

Since we live in a digital age the abstract of an anolog system is harder to absorb. There is no magic to a complex analog system. It just works the way you actually think rather than the way you were taught about everthing else. The system is not inherently logical but is capable to use logic as an abstact. The whole system revolves around "true" and "is this enough like that". This is very different from "equal", "false", and all the other logical operators we are taught. I am nt saying we should be taught differently. Those abstracts have their place in everyday life but the system behind it is just trying to figure wheter "is this enough like that" is true.
