Noooo... what happened to the whole "found out in-game"? This is very unfortunate. Now every newspawn will know exactly what he or she is good at, and I've already witnessed many characters comparing their skills in-game!
"Hey everyone, I'm an expert fighter, farmer and manufacturer of tools! Ain't that cool!?"
"Sweet! I'm an expert at building and hunting myself!"

How the hell do you know how good you are at somethign when you haven't even tried it?

Now, i like that characters are different and has unique values. But I hate this idea. Hate it.

As has been mentioned many times in this thread

You Only see skills you have tested

Skills you haven't tested are not displayed

EDIT: Phylanx ... I'm shocked

This seems reasonable; if I understand correctly, this merely simplifies the procedure most experienced players have already been following with their newspawns: test them out on a bunch of projects and write down the skills.

Yeah, go Phalynx!! Enough people have jumped over the several notifications of you only know the skills you've used, it deserves a snapping at.

How about some bragging about our characters? Or statistics? They seem to be pretty well-rounded.

Even though it seems like some charries are totally all thumbs, my people have an average of 3.1 areas of expertize. The best one has 8 of them, second best has 6.

My clumsiest character with 5 awkward skills is in a leading position, and the second awkwardest(sp?) is a successful trader with 4 awkward skills. So you see kid, you don't need to do things physically if you know how to handle people. In total my characters have an average of 2.2 awkward skills.

I'm a whinger, but not because of that. I never liked the introduction of skills.
Even though I agree with Sho, that people are doing this anyway, and so there's a point to it in that respect, I won't be happy until I see skills gone completely... Then again, Cantr does have the most RP-friendly skill system ever, what with no numbers, and no non-utilitarian skills, but it still bugs me.

SekoETC: I think that should go in a new thread or else it will get confusing... I have been suprised at how good some of my characters spread of skills relate to they have been doing...

Also suprised at how many things my characters have tried that I done't even remember them doing (Eg on charrie is effecient at forestry, but I dont remember him having a go..)

HF: why do you oldbies keep on moaning about skills? I still don't get it?

Thank you for sharing all you "statistics", Seko. It sounds like an announcer discussing an American football team.

This is all very depressing and makes me feel like launching another major character purge. It is depressing because when you see them all listed like that, it becomes so glaringly obvious that there's no rhyme or reason or logic or even common-sense thought involved in the Cantr skills system. :x

The problem is that for me it's an intellectual disgrace. One cannot work with it to mould a character in any shape or form.

But isn't that fate and the stars an all that.... if we could make our charries exactly what we wanted it would be lunacy!

Where is the logic in mining skillfully and digging awkwardly? I'm talking logical organization. Many years ago Ultima Online at least had that. Your charries had some mix of intelligence, agility and strength, and their skills relied on and flowed from that. So it was possibly to do more roleplay with your skills in a juvenile game like UO than it is here. Not so?

If the programmers think that an endless, confusing and illogical list of atomized "skills" will improve matters, then they are seriously mistaken, but it is the system itself that's unusable.

Unfortunately there's no way to avoid having to slug someone to see how good a fighter you are. But oh well, I'm happy.

I guess I didn't read all of what was said in this topic. I am an idiot, Phalynx.

I still find it so uncessary to have a listing at what you're good at. Why would you ever need such a list anyway? I can think if a few reasons of course, but I can honestly don't come up with a good one that would serve the game, nor RP, in a positive way.

There will be A LOT more talk about one's skills in the future, that's for sure. I just hope it doesn't have a big impact on the game, and if it doesn't, I'm OK with the list.

I have to confess I like the skills list but I shuddered when I heard this (altered to protect the innocnent and evade the 4 day rule):

1500-1.19: BigBossMan says: "Crew, if you'd take a look at yourselves and give me a copy of your skills, please. (he smiles) it'll be good to know who's good at what, for planning who does what jobs."

That does suck I admit!

Exactly my point. I've seen this too on several different locations. It pains me everytime... Although it isn't the skill-listing we should blame, it's the players who are so concerned about the skills that it comes before RP. However, these surveys have existed before, just not as frequently as today.

"Hey everyone, I'm an expert fighter, farmer and manufacturer of tools! Ain't that cool!?"

That would be me. (without the hey everyone) It follows my rp and IC information so I figured I could say it. I've already used these skills many times.
