he didn't say numbers. he said character representations. that would be:

Code: Select all

:)

:|

:(

but now on to the suggestion itself:
i think the expensive part is accessing the characters database and retieving all the various health values. i sort of doubt loading 3 little images was a problem, when there are about 15 other ones that the game has to load for the objects, inventory or people pages anyway.

ps (@halucinatingfarmer): numbers cannot hurt you. they are your friends.

I was replying to the first bit of netherspawns first post... I don;t wanna see numbers displayed - but I like the idea of smileys again...

But... I'm sure the numbers are already stored - but to get a 'general' smiley woluld require a lot of calculation between health, tiredness, hunger etc...

I think there should be a button next to each character on the character list to get their stats bars up - that would save server use - as you wouldn't have to load the events page then load the character info page everytime you want to see how your character's doing...

And numbers are not my friend - they are eveil aliens from the world of the abstract and desrve to be crunched until they no longer meddle with our daily lives...

Alright... This is a bit of a rant, but I need to get my point across.
Is it really that much trouble to have the smiley faces working?
I've lost two of my favorite characters due to the whole "starvation" thing.. Is this my fault? Yes. Of course, but I have had little time to play this game recently, and due to the server being slow at times, haven't had time to check that either. I really wish I could have been able to alter the way my brave, cocky, character died, besides dropping dead like any new spawn would. I guess it's my fault, but if the smiley faces would still work, I'd never have had any trouble with this in the first place.
Thanks for listening... I think I'll be sick now... I'm still a little stunned.

It's a strain someone said---

But what if you took out the "You are hungry" messeges we get, so that we could have the smileys back?

The "You are hungry" messeges don't help anyone apparantly, becuase there's still people dropping dead without realizing they're hungry. :(

My understanding is that they were implemented but turned off to lighten the load on the server. Perhaps they could be turned on now that the new server is in place.

good point...

But they came off when the new stats system was introduced - now that there is more than just 'damage' - what should the smilies reflect? judt damage, or hunger, or tiredness, or the whole lot? And who wants to spend the time to programme it so it takes them all into account...

I still reckon a way to access stat bars from the character page would be useful - but with the new speedy server - there's no longer any painful delay to get to the stats page for your charrie the traditional way...

Last I heard smilies aren't meant to indicate anything anymore...if they seem to rather than being all the same one, it's some holdover glitch meaning who-knows-what.

Unless I'm out of date.

I was thinking that the smiley should represent the worst of hunger and damage as tirdeness is not fatal.

I had never seen them work and have never known a world without hunger and tiredness.

You could just use a simple average of the different bars to produce the figure for the smily face, if you wanted to get more detailed, perhaps weight them so hunger is more important than tiredness etc.

*bump*

How about a button that runs a script to display the character bars on the character page when you want to see them?

Or a warning message that appears on the character page, maybe where 'dead' messages now appear, once any stat reaches below 20 or 10%?

If you go a year without noticing you're starving, you're an idiot, and you deserve to have your character die.

 Yes, but perhaps in a busy location it may be difficult to notice the "you are hungry" messages if you are just skimming the events page. . . . Or if you were gone for a while and only had a few minutes to check on you characters, it would be good to immediately know which ones need attention.
