I will just take this opportunity to have a moan about domesticated animals.

I'll begin by saying how disappointing milking some animals is. 12 grams of milk per mouflon? I don't know whether to laugh about it, or get cross. That makes them totally useless (vs the maintenance costs) bar for mutton. Gaurs do seem to be worth it, though... but let me tell you, those beasts eat like a beast, indeed!

Also, some type of goats eat vegetable feed, and the others don't... why not?

Don't even get me started on keeping different types of animals. One of mine has warthogs, and recently tamed a falcon. The falcon has meat feed so my char chucks in some meat feed into the trough with veg feed. The next day, the falcon goes hungry... since the hogs pinched its meat feed rather than eating their own veg feed!!!

It is so difficult to work out how to store feed so different animals don't pinch each other's food.

All in all, I find looking after animals both fun, and highly frustrating. Three of mine constantly make hay or feed. Some life.

NancyLee, okay that makes sense now, but that seems really weird to me, I would think a big old potato-harvesting machine should count as a resource slot, more than one guy picking a handful of potatoes for himself, it seems very.. unrealistic. I think harvesters should take resource slots, harvesters give a big advantage to resource-gatherers, why limit the people who have to pick something by hand?

ChromaKey, right? It's so confusing! I think hay should be an automatic, or automatic-with-assistance type project, people don't sit around all day watching hay dry in real life, they lay it in piles in the sun and let it dry itself, it's not fair that characters need to produce copious amounts of hay for animals they can barely get anything from, when in real life all you have to do is lay alfalfa out on the ground and let the sun do all the work. And yet bread is automatic? And cookies? In real life if you just walk away from a batch of cookies for ten minutes they're gonna be burnt to a crisp and ruined, but you have to constantly tend to your hay or what? It gets too dry? I don't get that.

I've seen it work that way for the four years I've been playing, so never stopped to think about it. Being realistic or not is not really an element of judgement for me, since being hurt badly with a battle axe in the chest and recovering by eating a bunch of onions is not much realistic either (I think someone has a funny quote from Cdls in their siggy about those organic onions). For me, Cantr has its own reality. I am okay with that system as it is now and with harvesting machines not requiring a slot, since the inversion in them would be less worth it if the system was changed and it could make some well populated towns struggle if the machines used a slot too.

Edit to add: I like that there's a limited number of gathering slots even if it sometimes exasperates my characters. It also brings occasion for negotiating, be it for switching places for a while (claiming there's no room enough in those bushes where the silk cocoons are, that we want switch tasks or whatever) or to trade goodies. If 20 characters could gather the same resource in the same place and still the rest of people could keep on gathering whatever they were gathering, it would make some valuable resources... well, less valuable. Plus, in most towns with a raw food resource as potatoes, rice or carrots, there's harvesters and those require no slot, so it's not likely people would starve even if they're in a community that doesn't provide food.

Bmot wrote:Yes, but it also depends per animal, there is a maximum "per pack". So, it could be that 4 sheep take 1 slot, but 5 sheep take 2 (I'm not sure what the numbers are). This number does change per pack, as well, so some animals can have more numbers in one slot than others. For cows, I believe it's two...

Yes, the purpose of limited resource slots is to make resources not quite so unlimited, meaning there's a reason to trade for them.
And in case it wasn't clear, the amount of resource slots used refers to the amount of characters working on resource projects, not the number of actual projects, because a number of characters can work on the same project.
