Not necessarily....a cannon wouldn't have to instantly sink a ship...nor would a cannon be easily made. But a town that is rather well off should be able to defend itself from pirate attacks.

I don't like the idea of guns but cannons would be okay, and pirates could still raid, since there'd need to be someone awake to actually fire the cannons.

EDIT: And if the pirates had a hostage the town might not want to risk sinking the ship. Also, would sinking it even kill anyone anyway, or just make them appear in the closest town, like they washed ashore?

I think it should make them wash ashore. Unless it's a certain distance away from land and a ship sinks another ship.

If ships sunk, people should probably have a chance to either die or get washed ashore.

Yeah, that'd be a good idea. But as i said, early cannons were extreemly inaccurate and had more chance of decimating the crew rather than the enemy. This still shows us that cantr life can continue as normal. But i dont like the idea of ships being able to fire on towns, that would mean you had information about the town, (number of people, even names) and thats kind of CRb...

Muskets could be made more fair in several ways (I think):

1. musket or cannon balls should be very expensive to make are not reusable

2. muskets should be very inacurate, there is only a 30% chance (or something like that) that it will hit

3. to load a musket you have to start a project that takes a few hours

ect.ect...

Oh something like:

1483-0.16: You see a woman in her fifties start to load a musket
1483-0.16: You expertly behead a woman in her fifties with a steel sabre before she even takes aim.

People would carry a musket ready loaded, except perhaps when travelling!

The chance of a hit should be 1:10 because the results except with an iron shield perhaps would be automatically lethal.
It would of course be a pointless weapon then and more of a status symbol!

I think it should be perhaps 3:10, to make it more canteristic, and disirable to have a musket. But if that happens, the damage should be more like 50-80%

I don't really want to see any sort of firearm, but I guess a musket ball would do a lot less damage than a sword, except in lucky cases, as suggested. I think a lot of thought is necessary here to avoid upsetting the game dynamics or whatever it's called.

The biggest firearm calibre in standard (laugh) use... is .50 calibre, or therabouts.

A musket ball was closer to .58 calibre.

Now seeing as a .50 calibre bullet can easily blow a hole in you the size of a softball, a musketball isn't pleasant.

I'd love to see this implemented, as well as cannon for ships or land...

Big calibre yes, but the explosive wasn't up to much was it? Cannons on ships yes... but with all thes "disruptive technology" might change the game too much. That's for others to decide.

I was just thinking how cool ship combat would be, so I bumped this. My idea is a little different than the main one for this thread, but I didn't want to make a new thread and find out its a nother duplicate

What I'd like to see is that you can build either a catapualt, ballista, or cannon on a ship, and if another ship was in docking range you'd also get a button to attack it. The closer you were the better chance you'd have of hitting it, with almost 100% if you were docked togeter.

How I picture this is that a catapault would require stone to use, and it would hit everyone on board with medium damage. A ballista would hit only one person, but it'd be like being hit with a crossbow or worse. A cannon would requir an iron cannonball and hit one person just as hard, with a random chance of doing medium damage to everyone else.

If you were within docking distance or actually docked to a town there could be an attack button next to its name, and everything would be the same, accept a cannonball would have a chance of destroying the lock on a random building.

The thing is, towns can build all the same weapons to, and attack ships the same way, with an equal chance of hurting the crew or destroying the ship's lock (if they hav a cannon), depending on how far away it is or whether its docked.

(The main person the ballistas and cannonball hit would always be random too, and catapaults would be made out of wood and just a tiny bit of iron, while ballistas would be wood and a litle steel, and cannons are several kilos of iron.)

guns are to powerful, water guns might be ok (there could be water canons instead of canons...)

The water cannons could be used to keep immigrants out.
