You can still RP the learning process but I would wager if you did it with a toon that no one knew OOCly you wouldn't get far.

Unarmed newspawns are looked upon with fear unlike well armed stangers that people happen to know OCCly either directly or by seeing them go that way or use that vechicle from another toon. Instance by instance people rationalize that whatver they do is RP but when it comes right down to it, it simply isn't.

People asked for steel and had OOC tech agendas (running off to areas where they could get stuff easier) before the wiki if you look back though the forum.

If everyone did everything perfectly there wouldn't be anything to talk about.

Next time somebody asks you for iron ask "why?" when they say why like a weapon and "why?" again. That is some of the RP that is missing. Yes you've done it a thousand times and most of the time it is pointless but is it your character that is tired of it or you? Not really RPing then are you?

There is shades of grey to the RP thing and mostly people miss things and default into the same dull pattern: "Fear the new and hoard" newspawns and old alike.

I tried to make one "blank" character. And others ruined it for me.
A town that had never seen iron, told me they didn't have any iron when I asked them. (I did see iron in another place, because of the locks they had).

I decided to give up on it because they just kept ruining it.

Well I think that would be unfair since this thread only represents a small number of the players in the game. There's also plenty of players that appreciate that addition to the game. I think it would be a bad idea to repeal that rule. We're losing enough players as it is on this game and we'll end up losing more with new players who get tired of running around town like a chicken with their heads cut off. This is'nt Mario Bros. where you can learn the game in two days. And you can't always rely on the populace of a town to really be helpful at best that method would be abominably slow anyway and I don't think most could hold their interest in learning to make a hammer or bone knife over the period of a week. I think it should be left up to the players to decide how they want to play in that respect if you want to RP RP if you want to use the wiki for what is allowed use the wiki. Then everybody that plays can go order a pizza and some beer and say damn I love Cantr. Many of the people in the towns my characters have lived have used the wiki for simple things others opted for the dumbass newspawn that knows nothing either way they I saw few cases where they woke up and started asking for shit they always roleplayed their personalities many where interesting. The only thing they did'nt roleplay was asking a bunch of fucking techincal questions on how to make a hammer or a bone needle no big loss from my point of view.

I feel the wiki is needed. And it cannot be taken off, only substituted by something better. The technological development of cantr is closely attached to the creation of the wiki, and actually before it the technology was pretty low. Why? Because it was like wandering in a dark storage searching for something: pretty clueless.

If there isn't anyone who is up to creating a rational process or puzzle to simulate technological development so the wiki won't be needed anymore, then it is still necessary, doesn't matters the implications it has on rp. If you want to fix rp, make rp conventions or postulates, define what is recommended to be a "good" roleplayer e.g:

Do not be a walking encyclopedia, your char doesn't know all the wiki.

So as Wiro said, if noone have seen iron nor heard about it, then they shouldn't comment about it. And actually, this works pretty fine if a majority adopts it.
