Cdls wrote:On the contrary, I've got a character who washes it's hands when it touches a dead body,
Okay, but do they
all wash their hands, since you did claim you didn't want to be unrealistic.
No, you see, if they DID wash their hands every day I'd be a hypocrite. Not if they didn't. My point here is and has been, that people over-exaggerate things. To me I only need wash my hands every once in a while IC, and people will just get the point that the character is clean/freaked out by the death and needs to wash its hands after burials. But if I do it every day? Then it looks like it's an obsessive compulsive, retarded mental patient on crack instead of just a regular person who has a rather normal distaste for touching dead.
I guess I like to be more creative in the sense If I wanted to portray cleanliness or bodily hygene for another of my characters I would come up with a different ways of doing it too. I wouldn't ALWAYS make them wash their hands after burrying a body. Maybe one time. Then the next they'd wash their hands because they were bloody from killing someone, or maybe another because they'd got dirt under their nails when they farmed. But I still wouldn't need to rp a scenerio EVERY single day for people to pick up on the point. Do you understand? You don't have to be LOUD in your RP for you to be able to believe that people do see it and care for it. It doesn't have to get a mention here on the forum for it to be true that people enjoy it. It doesn't have to be loud for people to understand that you're upset., nuts or even happy. There are so many traits on certain characters that I've picked up on personally, just cute, subtle habits....And they never get mentioned here, but whats sad is that their quality of RP is IMO, often times, 100 times better than a lot of the ones who get mentioned in the RP threads. lol
Cdls wrote:And they all show these things, in moderation. They don't stand in the middle of town obnoxiously tooting their "Im a freak show. Mention me on the forum!" horns. Or the, "I'm so bored, I need something to do immediately in Cantr so I'll *Sigh* And when they ask me what's wrong I'll make up something that suits the character so that it's not obvious that the player behind it is bored and just looking for something to do/the player behind is the one with the real emotional problems/so the character doesn't look like it just wants attention."
I really dont think many players actually do that whole "mention me on the forums" bit, and if thats what they are playing for, then yes, your argument may be sound, but I really dont believe the majority do that, so I have to disagree.
I find the rest of that quote to be just you trying to take a personal stab at the players behind the characters that annoy you.
You say to me a little on below that I should open my eyes and then maybe I would see. (I didn't appreciate that much. My eyes are open and I don't disclude that there's a possibility that there's probably a rarity of people going into a grocery store and sighing. Or standing in the middle of a carnival sighing. Though I can see why you'd get that impression from the way I'm arguing. But 9 times out of ten that person is doing it with people whom they KNOW and not generally walking around sighing just to see who will pay attention to them.) So I feel at liberty to say, "Are you really that naieve?" To believe what you just said to me above? First of all, you chose the word "many" on your own. But it doesn't much matter, because I do happen to feel that many do in fact do it in cantr. I don't know that the "majority" do it, but I know a lot of the ones whom I'm categorizing, do it. And I don't expect for them to step up on the podium here and say "You know what, you're right...I can't help it. It just makes me feel so good and so I think to myself that I'll show them more." lol.... I've seen it happen though! You mean to say that you've never met anyone who is so into their own RP that they can't accept criticims? But the minute they're mentioned in the RP thread it goes to their heads? You know their character IC and soon as they discover they got a mention, that character suddenly begins to do whatever it was doing before the mention like 10x more? It's not just the praise thread. It's the annoying thread too. I've seen players who attend these forums and no doubt read and post in the aforementioned topics. They'll read the annoying characters thread where someone says "I fuckin hate that character ______He's so irritating." And I've watched the character that belongs to the person getting the mention, get real ornery toward the character of the person who was mentioning them. I've watched the irritating habits of that character increase to the point it's almost unbearable.
Personal stab? Well, yes. It's a little personal only because it's a very personal subject when you're saying something about things that people take pride in and think they're doing a wonderful job of. I didn't want to start a debate, truly. But I knew the risks of what I was going to say too. I know it's going to piss a lot of people off, but I also know that there's lots of people out there right now who think the same things I think about the crap that is pedaled as "good rp," or "interesting."
Ever hear that saying? Good things are measured in "quality" not "quantity?"
Cdls wrote: I mean, how many retarded people do you know that so blatantly broadcast their problems to an entire town of people? Let me ask you how realistic it is for an Emo boy to go into a public place where they know absolutely NOONE, yet, and simply walk along and sigh? Trying to get people to notice them? Does that REALLY happen in the real world? I think I've missed it if it does. At least, they'd do it around people they knew, not people they didn't reallly know. Right? They'd want to hide stuff like that. Not throwing it all over on anyone who will even pretend to care......
Do you live in the real world Missy, cause if you opened your eyes you could see many examples of that. Or maybe I just live in a part of the world where it is normal....
Yes sir. (Are you a sir?)I live in the real world. I've had overly emotional friends. Boy have I ever. I can't tell you how closely some of these nutso characters DO resemble those friends. In exception of the fact the way the characters are played I can't see any other side to them. All I can see is how crazy they are. At least my over-emotional friends who had these same problems, I could still see that there was normalicy in them somewhere. Yeah I guess these emo characters still eat, they still farm and some of them even still become productive members of cantr society......
Cdls wrote:I feel like these people need shrinks outside of the game. I feel like they're looking for something they can't get in the real world--And I don't mean that in a good way. It's actually very sad to me. I think they need help emotionally and mentally in their real lives.
Pretty brutal statement from someone who hasnt met most of the players behind the chars, but who knows, maybe you are a licensed doc and can make those statements, but I really doubt it.
Oh..Yeah. I forgot to mention I did sit in on psych classes with my step mom. I don't have a liscence or degree and I can't diagnose a person. (I'm not exactly sure what that has to do with anything since I didn't claim to be a Dr.) Though I wouldn't use that as weight for why I think I can tell what I think I can tell. Thoughhhhh. Though.

I can observe patterns and put them together. (Especially for certain disorders.) I didn't realize you needed a degree to be able to tell that someone needed help or to recognize cries for help....

I didn't realize you needed one if you wanted to sit an annalyze the reasons why people would do something that they do.
I actually have met a lot of the players behind those sorts of characters. I have been playing 6years or so. I do go to IRC. Etc
Randi,
You said
And this is so much better than the day after day of dull boring sleepers who get nothing done and do not contribute any to the town itself or rp for days or years at a time at all then complain because it's too noisy. I'll take the same old mud fights, sighers, screamers and cryers over that anyday. If it bothers you that much, it's always a possibility to move your character on.
I don't deny that there are some things about these characters I can appreciate. I enjoy the fact they're wakeful.
However, I think there's more better ways to make things interesting than causing dramatic scenes, and I'd take THOSE interesting things over comatose sleepers and drama queens both. Course, I can just as easily say, "If it bothers you so much that the sleepers don't like your noise, you could move on." But would you? Or would you make more noise? Just to spite them? Or would you come up with a way to kill them for being sleepy and boring?
Because sleeping can simply mean the player has chosen a more laid back style of RP.
Anyway...I just want to add here that I've personally heard someone say, in regards to certain dramatic situations in certain towns where Emo's are responsible for all the noise very recently...
"I don't even feel like waking ____ up because I don't want to deal with that shit that's going on there."
I've heard this stated several times through several people in regards to listening to/dealing with/not wanting to deal with overly dramatic situations.
I've also heard people say that they don't want to scroll through pages of senseless babble just to get to the important things and that it makes them leave their characters asleep. So. How can you complain about sleepers when you now know that senseless babble can actually PUT them to sleep to begin with?
I also get the impression that you're saying that this sort of Emo stuff livens a town up and that's why it's done. That's sort of what your post here is implying to me. I just want to say that for the record, I've seen perfectly healthy towns with active leaders become victims of overly emotional drama.
Can I ask, when you apply drama whose boredom is it at the expense of?
I hate people.
