A simple cost-benifit analysis of war makes it almost universally pointless.
There's still a place for piracy. Yet why there are no even small pirate groups in Cantr, I don't know - it's been the only dissapointment with Cantr's glorious age of sailing...
A small pirate crew of 5 or so characters could still easily pillage many a large town...

No the reason the Cantr world is boring nowadays is because of the lag. I'm sure there are lots of people like me that used to regularly run their minutes down to single figures while playing, but now aren't prepared to waste time sitting around waiting for the page to load every time we try to do something.
Which is why there's less pillaging and piracy. No one is prepared to take the risk that they dock at a town, enter, start hitting people and picking up resources, then the lag comes in and they're frozen in place inviting for their hit and run to be foiled.
Yes i am aware there is another thread for discussion of the lag, but i'll think you'll find it's the number 1 reason why people don't bother anymore.

Best killings are the ones that leave no witnesses. So who knows how many of those happen, when people only found out years later on the forums or by some other OOC means. It can be fun for the killer's player but rarely for the victims. Not all people rp and who's willing to take the risk of being stabbed by a prisoner? Well, if it was a bone knife then that wouldn't matter that much but if you capture someone with a sword or a bow then most people will hide behind a locked door until the person agrees to drop their weapon(s).
Oh, I've been writing an article about imprisonment and slavery in Cantr, although it was just for a few days, I haven't worked on it for a long while. But if I manage to finish it then it'll go to the webzine.

Question: Would you rather be hurt or hurt someone else? (a question raised in my philosophy class)
False logic, of course.
The best answer for both sides, which doesn't need any high-falutin' intellect to arrive at, (and that should some up most Cantrians in their primitive society,) is neither to hurt nor be hurt.
It was a hypothetical situation... by hurt I didn't imply violence/injury, thought it was obvious.

Perhaps I should write an article about this topic? I can just quote you guys as well for further evidence..

No it's not... Wageing wars are highly profitable in Cantr. As to my knowledge anyway.
I belive that the lag are the cause that made Cantr boring. You can't take risks if the lag makes you loose the advantage of suprise. There's no idea of taking risks if the lag is the judge over your characters.

Yeah, I pretty much freaked out when I had calculated that docking would progress before my bed time but turns out it didn't progress AT ALL during that hour. And I felt like oh great, I bet someone will recognize my character and slaughter him while I'm online (he's exiled from the region). Actually I felt like if that would happen then I would just quit. But turns out no one (at least no one awake at the time) happened to be aware of him being supposed to be killed on sight. But I also learned that it takes two hours to dock instead of just one.

True, if analizyng the cost-benefit of only one side.
When taking in account all benefits and costs, for all sides (attackers, defenders and neutrals), war is expensive. In few words: for one gaining something, other have to lose twice.
For the whole comunity, cooperation is always better than competition.
For one individual, it depends on the availability of resources (if there are enough for everyone, fighting has no sense, but if not...) and his chances of beating others.
And as others have said, lag is fucking up Cantr good and proper.
Not only for avoiding hit and run attacks or other kinds of fights, but because you can't even talk!
Some of us are accostumed to Cantr lag. But in comparision with other free MMO(RP)Gs, it is a shame.
Cantr is still alive 'cause its way of play is wonderful, a quite original game and full of freedom of action. But the inner implementation is a pain for everyone.

I haven't been keeping in touch with Cantr in a while, so I may not really know what's going with Cantr's morals, but...
I also don't quite understand what the point is on how morals be quite based off the environment. I mean, if everyone where to follow that rule, how's that going to change the ratio between the people turning towards good and the people towards evil? The good places will spawn good people and the bad people will still spawn bad people. Again, I guess I don't know how certain players really determine their morals in-game.
But I do agree that morals should never be based from anything out-of-game, and that would include the players morals, as well.
No offense, but I think this is your most flawed statement here, N-Aldwitch. If your character told my character that the God which my character hypothetically has prayed to so long, it's reasonable enough that my character could maybe take your character's statement as a lie. My character, who is willing to pray such a long time to the God, may trust his God and knows who does believe and who doesn't. If you're character was a stranger to my character, my character would easily not believe you.N-Aldwitch wrote:In other instances, it is difficult to recruit characters who are blindly naive to doing 'evil'. Even if you give the best RP reason, they won't join you. For example, if you tell them that the God which they have prayed to for so long, will smite them unless they do something, the character (or mainly the player) still won't do anything.

With the God thing, I failed to explain that it would be a pastor or priest or the like telling the disciple to murder.

Bah, you don't need to recruit evil characters.
You can recruit a few merry adventurers and slowly and silently lure them with the pleasures of a freespirited piracy life.
Basically, Cantr is a mild world. There's no instant murder, there's no hiding and lurking in the shadows, there's instant access to healing for the local folk...

Of course it is... If you see to the whole picture war is a big drain. Instead of building things everything is stalled at best. At worst the work of generations and generations gets destroyed by war as a bounty to the conqourer. If everyone works together bigger things would be acived. But that's not real life and not even Cantr.
But something that haven't been accounted for is the unity in the same camp and their will to speed up production to finance the war. If there would not have been any wars IRL our technology would not have been as high as it is today. Nuculear power would not have existed just to mention one thing. Wars are acctualy not only bad things because wars pushes us to the limit and we create things that acctually has an civilian use aswell.
If WWII never have happend we might have not explored space yet... Still flying in propeller airplanes. Many things we use today is or has been a military invention that have found a higher or civilian use.

If an idealistic youngester comes to you telling "hey, I'm planning to overthrow the government, would you like to help me with that? Only that I don't have weapons right now and it might even be illegal to own weapons on this region but I'm sure that together we could gather some steel and iron and stuff" -- would you join them? At least I wouldn't. They would have to be at least 40 years old and carrying some signs of wealth, preferably ones they have earned or made though their own work. Any random person could gain wealth by happening to be the first person online after a keyholder dies, but it takes some tactical intelligence to be able to hold on to that wealth.

I don't think so.
I would say instead "Many things we use today are or have been civilian inventions that were only ful-financed once some ugly government realized that it can serve them for dominating others"
I mean... mankind sucks. Or at least most of the powerful people should burn in the bonfire.
I would like to know how war can help us to avoid the Climate Change.
Now even hydrogen engines couldn't help us.
VENUS THEORY !!!!
