Well you can stop gabbiling on about immersion then. Maybe you should relax, misspell sometime and enjoy the game, because if you take all that time in typing you are missing out big time!

And don't be so paranoid... you didn't even start this thread.. you are just the most vocal member of the Grammar Facists!

phalys i wonde why you bother to use corect paticalization puctuation an pseling if it realy deosn mater. surely youwod save yourself a lot of presous miliseconds by not hittin the sift key and leaving a few useles leters off every here and there.

its not like the ppl who rite porely did it because ther is notherway they do now therules an do use them for importanthings sucas schoolasignmets and someteims even job applications web games are not important web games aresometing to pas time wit you play it whe yur bored an then yout os your chars in the garbage because your neds hav been satisied its all about respect towards your readers lsash fellow player and for someo f us a wish to apear as inteligant an educated as one raly is but therae some peopl w care neiteh aobut the fun and welbing of others nor givin out a positive impreso about themselvas.

The same in actual English:

Phalynx, I wonder why you bother to use correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling if it really doesn't matter. Surely you would save yourself a lot of precious milliseconds by not hitting the shift key and leaving a few useless letters off every here and there.

It's not like the people who write poorly did it because there is no other way, they do know the rules and do use them for important things, such as school assignments and sometimes even job applications. -- Web games are not important. Web games are something to pass time with. You play it when you're bored, and then you toss your characters in the garbage bin, because your needs have been satisfied. -- It's all about respect towards your readers / fellow players. ...And for some of us, a wish to appear as intelligent and educated as one really is. But there are some people who care neither about the fun and well-being of others nor giving out a positive impression about themselves.

What ever, this topic makes me puke.

You are making some pretty big assumptions there....

Some people haven't had a good schooling... Some people's language skills are not well developed... some people don't write so well but can manage to type to some extent.... and some people don't need affirmation about how clever or intelligent they are.

Additionally can some one tell me, because I don't know, do users of other alphabets (arabic, chinese) struggle with capitalisation or punctuation.

It's all so self centred. It's a game. It's dying (the english language part). Right now in game I would happily swap 5 Nitefyres, literary pretentsions and sleepy old characters doing nothing much, for one new player who comes along and plays the game with enthusiasm and an enquiring, exploring mind. I don't care what form of english they use as long as they can be understood. Being there and looking around, talking and trying things is what's good. RP, 'appropriate language' can develop afterwards with a bit of peer pressure and gentle tutuion.

We had a thread about emoting in the past tense recently - I hate this, it destroys my immersion of the game, but someone is making an effort and playing the game so I'm prepared to let it slide to allow them in to have some fun. Cantr is not some game like D+D where you have to read a novel to understand the rules. The more prescriptive and bitchy you are about it, the more players will leave. IMO

OMG, I agree with Phalynx. :) I've never been involved in an rp game before. I found out about Cantr from a friend who found it googling about Esperanto... At least some of the marketing might target more people who could develop enthusiasm for a multilingual society simulator, and for whom gaming is somewhat stigmatised. The snootiness and nerdiness here put my friend off and he no longer plays, though he is a better writer, and typer, than I am.

I think there's two types of people being talked about here...

Those that are lazy, extremely lazy, and don't really try..

And those that actually do try to do the best they can, even if it's not the best and sometimes hard to read through.

Personally, I hate any chatroom-like word useage such as "u" or "ur" or "lol" (within the context of the game), etc. I do not penalize players I see in the game using these though because I do know that essentially, "u" sounds like "you" sounds like "ewe" and really, the chars are talking, so it's how it would sound that is important, not how it's spelled. I hate it when no punctuation at all is used because it's difficult to read, well, at least if there is no punctuation between sentences, i.e. "youre so weird how can you do things like that i cant even gather carrots efficiently really i hate those toucans they always hit me". I still won't penalize players by not interacting with them because of that; it's just hard to follow.

Misspellings don't bother me too much. They do a little but I know it doesn't matter as long as I understand them and there are things called typos. Another couple of things that do bother me (but again, it doesn't matter because I understand what they're saying usually) are when people don't use "to" and "too" correctly and when they don't use "your" and "you're" correctly, etc. I still don't penalize them for their mistakes (which are usually glaring to me). Yea, a nerve is pricked, but I just take a deep breath and think about the fact that they could be in the second category. It would bother me more if I knew for sure that they were being extremely lazy and wrote properly (at least decently) for other things for school, work, etc.

I've found that there are newspawns that start off with some of those situations and they improve in their punctuation, etc, as they go along.

I also think that one reason that some are so strict about grammar is because you get jaded after awhile. So many that use really poor or lazy grammar end up just dying anyway without every contributing much. I don't know if that's because of people not trying to interact with them or not. I know I try to always interact with them, but they die anyway and it gets frustrating.

Why don't we just choose a phonetic chart to use and spell phonetically? :D jk lol (Uh oh, there goes my chatroom speech.)

Without reading the above thread - isn't there a huge difference here between many spelling mistakes (awkward, but certainly not disturbing enjoyment of playing the game) and many typical online abbreviations, e.g. ur, lol, etc. (really annoying, since it always takes you out of character into the mindset of modern day communication). The latter makes Cantr look more like most games where players chat, but in the latter those *players* chat, not the characters. For me it's more difficult to think in character when people play like that.

But this is really very different from grammar fascism - perfect punctuation and spelling is hardly necessary in Cantr.

Yeah, Hermi. And while I'll confess that things like effective use of apostrophes can really blow my skirt up, so much prescriptivist nonsense about grammar is not only no fun, it's unnatural.

This is an age old Cantr forum discussion...

Internet speak developed as a means of communicating via type, at speed, with an added flair of adolescent stylisings. It does what it does - the above - very well.

It is not laziness, or disrespect for 'the English languge' (Not that the English language has ever been something sacred) but a development and adaption of it for certain purposes.

Whether you like it or not doesn't matter - it works for those who use it.

You wouldn't complain that a secretary makes notes in shorthand? Even if you cannot understand it - surely you can see how it developed, and that it is applicable to the situation? Both are systems developed for situations, not all disimilar, and work.

Internet speak isn't laziness either. It actually takes more thought processing to type a word with a wildy incorrect spelling, and to use acronyms at speed.

I doubt any kid who uses internet speak would dream of using such a stylising in formal communication. The likelihood, if their essays or similar are poorly spelt and punctuated, it is not conditioning through internet use, but a lack of writing skills in general.

Very rarely do I see 'internet speak' in Cantr. Usually players very quickly pick-up that it is not suited for Cantr, and revert to a more formal style.

More often, I see what is clearly an imperfect set of writing skills. Why is this an issue?
Seko's example is pointless - I have never seen such bad spelling in cantr, and if I did, it reads as someone with a writing issue - not internet speak.
We were all once poor spellers. We weren't born knowing where commas should be used. Why be such arseholes towards people with poor writing skills? It does nothing but inflate personal senses of self-righteousness and piss others off.

As for rushed typing - that's marginally less excusable, but certainly not worthy of the bile it receives. People may be in a rush in real-life. may be 'in the moment', or, rightly, care more about playing the game and enjoying it, than disappearing up their own rear ends whilst combing by-the-character, what they type.

There are a lot of heads in arses (mine included).

I vote for a new CD position to be filled - official craniumintercolonitis surgeon.
Whoever you vote for.

Whoa there people. Didn't mean to spark off such a rant from everybody just by joking about the linked video!

Still it's good fun to read, so let it roll on :D

I think it's a bit much to expect everybody to use perfect grammar - I know mine isn't always perfect, but I try my best. Similarly, Marian's isn't always perfect, such as the phrase that she ends with a preposition in her last paragraph, but again, she tries her best as she points out... to start moaning about these minor things would indeed be ridiculous.

On the other side, with which you so strongly fight, Phalynx, is the idea that there's no need to put any effort into writing in a coherent manner (strangely, although you are so vocal for this, you do actually type with pretty reasonable grammar etc).

There are various reasons why a total lack of grammer etc can cause problems - these are all things I have discovered from playing another online game:

1) You don't always get understood correctly if you type with awful spelling. I've had more than one potential war looming in War of Empires just because two people on opposing clans wrote so badly that they misinterpreted each other and got into a fight over it.

2) It's damn hard for foreign players who are trying to improve their English. Imagine it - you've spent however long it is learning English, and then you come up against msn-messenger-speak. I play War of Empires with a number of Dutch and Indonesian players, and some of them have had real problems understanding some of the English teenagers due to the teenagers' appalling standards of writing.

3) People don't listen to what you say. On a few occasions, someone has made a good point on our forum, but made it in awful English. I have had to re-iterate points that they've made before because others reading the thread just glanced over it and couldn't be bothered to spend time translating it. One of the other moderators has, from time to time, actually edited the post and written it out in English underneath (similar to Seko adding his translation to his own post earlier) because he fears that otherwise a good point will go unnoticed.

If a newspawn arrives in Cantr and writes in bad English, people may well glance over it, and if their eyes don't pick it out and read it as they skim over the last day's events, they may not be heard. For example, did anyone here actually manage to read all of Seko's untranslated paragraph? I got halfway through it, and my brain told me to move on as it was too tired to cope with it!

On the War of Empires forum, Mosher has made a name for himself as a truely dreadful speller. Now part of this is because he just isn't a natural writer, and he's much better with science and maths. When he puts some effort in (which he did for a while, using some of the ideas Marian mentioned just now), his posts were perfectly easy to read - by no means perfect, but the errors he made were decipherable.

Other times, he doesn't bother, and the errors he makes naturally are compounded by the errors he makes by not bothering to use a dictionary or spell checker, and are compounded by his msn-language, and are compounded by his typos and lack of proofreading. All these together can make his posts into total rubbish.

A recent post, a suggestion for a game improvement, was:

Can use google to proxy if you dont have it on login : www.warofempires.com/WOE7/EN/login.jsp could it be /login.jsp instead becouse woe is blocked and we want too use it in lessons THEY MAKE US DO WORK!! Anyway, When you use google it opens the full link in java so it is blocked think you can change it so it aint?

To which the Game Designer/Admin's first reply was:

Huh?

which was then repeated by the next person to read the thread! Took another few hours and a rephrase before the poor admin could understand the problem, let alone do something about it. Wasted both their time.

So I don't expect people to spend four hours reading up on the difference between "would" and "should", making sure they say "less" instead of "fewer" or vice versa, checking for split infinitives and saying "as if" instead of "like" if they follow it with a verb...

...but I do expect people to write in a fashion that allows me to read what they write at the same speed I'd expect to read most other things. Having to stop and decipher someone's post (as you'd have to do for Seko's mock one if you didn't have the translation underneath) is really annoying. Fortunately, from what I've seen so far, almost everybody in Cantr does fit into the category of typing so I can read without stopping to decipher, so I'm pretty happy on the whole.

Ok, whose turn to rant next?

Yes, nothing can change the subject more than responding to the initial subject we're supposed to be talking about. :D

I agree, that was a good video.

Jos Elkink wrote:So where, exactly, do we find those quality players you're talking about? :)

I do think the game needs more of them as we seem to be losing them disproportionally ... That requires improving recruitment and improving their ability to enjoy the game ... But on the first, where should be look? (On the latter we have plenty of discussion already ;) ...)

Some of the most long-term players I know of have come from CHARPs. IE Brandon, Chelsea, and what's his name (I think,) that played "Toast?" And then there's myself, although I know some people wish I weren't here. lol

One of the things that attracted me to remain playing Cantr was that there was a cap on what could/couldn't be role-played. In CHARPs you always had people trying to play gods and ridiculous rules that changed for sparring as well as an enormous amount of OOC chatting which ~ruined~ CHARPing for me.

The problem with advertising in a CHARP, (which I should remind is where my husband spotted Cantr, although we never did find out who was advertising it in there,) is that people who are serious about CHARP'ing tend to ignore people who are advertising, and the serious ones are who you'd want. lol

It would take having someone to go into a CHARP and RP there all the time and make a set of friends that they could suggest the game to after a period of time.
I hate people.
