...actually, now having just checked that with my characters I can safely say I am dreaming up a load of rubbish.

But anyway, how is it true that your line of sight increases when on a boat?

How far your eyes are capable of seeing doesn't increase on a boat, but your line of sight does stop being blocked by hills, buildings, etc, once you're out on the open water. How this would translate to Cantr I'm not sure, as things don't seem to get in the way when travelling cross-country.

Currently you can see the same distance from boats as on land, except that you see lighthouses ...

Being ahead of my time and all, I suggested this a while back, It got a couple of replies and a decent web site to look at. You might want to refer to the thread "New tool the sextent or is it sextant."

http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4048

I like the idea of giving only one coordinate (east/west) and perhaps you should just scale that coordinate in a range somewhere around 1-1000 or 1-10000, just so its not crazy long.

Perhaps two new projects could be added one requiring a sextent, and the other requiring a sextent and a clock/watch the first gives only one coordinate, the latter both.

Next, we can launch GPS satilites and make recievers for them...

This just came up in the IRC, and I like it (hence the bump, with my apologies - better than a duplicate topic, though; thanks to Wichita for pointing this one out).

The one downside that hasn't really been brought up here is the CR problem - if people make maps with sextant coordinates, it would be easy (and very tempting) for an unscrupulous player to use one character's map to guide another character.

The simplest solution would be to have each sextant have its zero point, set to place of manufacture by default. A character who uses a sextant where it was built gets a reading of 0. If they move north some distance, a reading gives a value of 25, and if they move south, it becomes -25. For convenience, a sextant's offset value should be modifiable.

Obviously this rather throws realism to the winds. It does, however, also get rid of the problem of choosing an equator for Cantr, which is toroidal and therefore has no poles.

This would also work quite well with chronometers, in that it's actually realistic to set the time on a chronometer.

We could somewhat compensate for the "too weirdly precise" problem by putting a random deviation on the reading, possibly modifiable by a skill.

Couldn't this argument also apply to the land maps currently in existence? Yet we have those... :)

I like the idea of it only giving one attribute. Makes it more like real sextants. East-west was traditionally measured by 'dead reckoning' - or recording how fast you were sailing at what angle every day and making an educated guess.

If you're gonna bump, read the thread, Sho. See my post on the first page.
