NOT work-place friendly comedy piece

Postby Lisje » Fri Jun 17, 2005 3:05 am

A great example of someone making fun of himself, and acheiving possibly classic success.
I'm not sure if this was rebroadcast, it should have been, but given our current "moral" climate, I'm not sure the networks are that brave.
And I firmly believe you can be as "PO'ed" at the world, or critical of it, as you can stand, if you are able to laugh at yourself first. It's only the "holier than thou" (possibly "my excrement don't stink" would be the prefered term) types I might be tempted to ban from that privlege.

Restating - DO NOT view for the first time with anyone you think could be in the least offended by non-vulgar lewdity.

Great quote from the film Yo-Yo! I think that may have been his finest acting work! I hope you're not planning to be that guy here in a couple of years.

The field party brings back so many memories...or at least some cloudy hazy stuff where memories should have gone. The only thing missing in the movie was the guy getting run over by the pickup truck after passing out drunk behind it.

Televised news. From India. I apologize, but Lord man, it can't get any simpler than that! Should I draw it out? It's not all that hard to figure out. I am sorry, but come on now man, just think!

Reminds of the time someone asked me what a British arab was. Man I hated that guy..........

 Schme... you are a fairly dense person aren't you? You need to stop taking people literally for your own sake or you're going to continue to look mentally impotent. I understood just fine what Indian News was. I think the important thing to take away from my statement right there was that nobody here cares about Indian News. And the fact that you brought it up was a little weird. Everybody good now? Class dismissed.

Do you have "The League Of Gentlemen" Over in the U.S? You cannot claimed to have watched a funny comedy show till you've watched that one. Simply Wonderfull!

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? To borrow a joke from Darrel Hammond, didn't that join forces with "Gigli" to form the League of Extraordinarily Bad Movies?

No, we don't get the TV show.

You're the dense one it seems, because his point went right by you.

Wrong, Nick. He only replied in a way that made it SEEM as if his point went right by me. I can assure you it didn't. And his ad hominem attack on my intelligence is deserving of a retort. I'm willing to let it end there.

Comedy Central was playing The League of Gentlemen here for a while and it was absolutely brilliant in my opinion. I don't think it caught on though because most American's are simply too daft to properly understand British humour. I love many things about my nation's culture, but our rather one-dimensional sense of humour is not necessarily one of them at times. :?

I don't know if that is completely true Wichita. From my experience, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is the most quoted movie in the USA (I think I remember something about the cast getting more comments from Americans then even the British). It is also a movie that I am almost certain that 80%-90% of Americans under the age of 30 have seen (can't really speak for those that are older, but I expect them to be high as well), and is generally well liked and thought to be quite funny. I know there are also massive followings of many other British comedys such as "Red Dwarf" and of course "Dr. Who".

Good point, but The Holy Grail seems to be the oddball of British comedy in the States. See how many Americans can quote The Meaning of Life or The Life of Brian. I guess I just got used to my friends screaming WTF as I was trying to watch episodes of Are You Being Served? on PBS at night. Of course they couldn't grasp any of the humour in The Kids in the Hall either, so maybe I was just surrounded by idiots until the age of 24!

I think it also really depends upon which part of the USA you look at. Back home on the west coast, British comedy is big. When I moved out here into the bible belt though, just about everything, including British comedy, is totally different, and I am still adjusting to it. I however am a fan, and am trying to influence all of these crazy religous fanatics out here (I have all three Monty Python DVDs and would really like the Flying Circus, but I can't afford the set, nor have I ever had BBC America to tape the episodes as they were/are reaired).
