How could someone do such a thing? Evil is definetly amongst us. This isn't a act of just some bad person. This is a mark from the DEVIL!

Devil or no devil, whoever did this must have had some reason to target the governor.

No finger pointing mind you, but what have us simple folk got to worry 'bout from the governor. I reckon one of them judges narrows his eyes might have gone for him. Get a bump up on the power ladder?

I don't see that any of us simple folk would want to get rid of the governor. He's never got in our way, quiet guy he was... Only can I imagine that someone who would gain from his death would do it, and I see that judges, seeing that they might think themselves next in line for govenor, might be likely...

Sweaty from her morning's work, Mortaine comes around into the town square, pulling her wheelbarrow of "fyrewood," just the same as yesterday. She pauses when she sees the assembled townsfolk and the worry on their faces. She sets the wheelbarrow down and edges forward to look at the mutilated body.

"Ayup. That's definitely a job for a shovel," she says weakly, and some of the townsfolk might be a little surprised to see that, in fact, a Negress *can* turn quite pale when appropriately shocked.

Mortaine returns to the shed behind the church and gets out the same shovel she used yesterday to turn the mutilated chickens under.
