I agree with you Jetlag that there is a problem with the communication of the Cantr volunteers and the players.

I know from experience in other games where I played and/or volunteered that this is very hard to do right: you don't want players moaning about changes that make the game more interesting in the long run (such as item deterioration), but you do want (constructive) input from (experienced) players about upcoming changes.

I think it would be a lot better if there was an announcement of changes, detailed like "we're changing link colour back to orange" or vague like "we're going to change items".

And I know Cantr is using a database, but AFAIK database technology has come a long way the last decades and table corruption should generally not happen, even under heavy load and heavy use.
If it does, than you're not doing something right.

PS. Peanut: please don't try to be so funny and don't post in this thread again, unless you have some serious contribution.

What are these "data loss" issues everyone is referring to? The only permanent, major recent issue I can recall was a brief amnesia period for our characters when they forgot the names of some folks they met in previous days.

Any other issues have been rectified quickly many before I even realised it was a problem.

As for discussing changes with the gamers before implementing changes I'm sure that if you dug into the Suggestions forum you'd probably find multiple threads about all of the recent major changes to the game. There is certainly lots of material and suggestions offered to the programming department through that means - and they do listen and take those suggestions into consideration.

...And one day when vehicles returned to the places they had left from, if they had left on the previous day. But that affected only one of my characters and it wasn't so bad.

Like TSL said, Neelix should post who he played so that we wouldn't have to wonder about some characters dropping dead all of a sudden. At least I have no idea, probably never even met ingame but who knows.

Ah yes... one of my cyclists got returned back to the beginning.... but when he started riding he got to his destination almost immediately - I guess prog managed to fix how far along the path we were too at some point.

I'm sure I'd find multiple, lengthy threads that include at least ten people's opinions, and if I had several hours every day I'd probably read somewhere in that the the tiny percentage of posts that say "We are doing x shortly". I just think it would be a lot easier to keep track of actual changes if they were all collected together in one thread.

Cantr for me was a nice game, because it doesn't take a lot of time to play it properly. You can invest time whenever you want and are not obliged to play some amount of time per day.

However, to play Cantr properly, you have to read the forum extensively and keep up to date with all suggestions there, read the general forum, etc.

And I just don't have time to invest in all that. There has to be a better way of doing that.

I know it has been mentioned before for the people that don't read the forum:

Someone leaving messages in the 'Messages' area in cantr itself.

I kinda disagree a little with Judith, there is a lot of constructive criticism, but it, unfortuantly, gets overwhelmed by the simple 'this is crap' posts that follow.

Asking any changes to be posted beofre hand would be similar to asking 'permission' before a change is made. That's not what Cantr needs. Cantr needs changes to be implemented as and when the staff have time to do so.

As for messages in the message area. That has improved considerably in recent days, with a lot of the major issues appearing on the forum also getting a mention there.

One of my chars is still in the middle of the sea in a car. He's going to starve soon.

I also agree that communication is the major issue causing problems. I think jetlag's post said it well.

When the tiredness changes became a problem for people there were multiple threads describing the problems and begging - literally begging - for some feedback about whether it was a bug or not and what might be expected for the future. This went on for months with no feedback from programmers. From November until January when things finally began to normalize and Jos posted his timeline. Many experienced and talented players just gave up and quit out of frustration during that time. In addition, countless cherished chars died because players didn't know how to deal with the multiple changes affecting their characters' lives and health.

I think this experience has caused the players to be somewhat fearful of and overreactive to change. I also think the communication from the programmers has improved since then. When Jur posted about the repair bug we at least knew someone was aware of it (even though he was a little cranky at first). This was immensely reassuring to everyone, I think.

An Announcements section would be great. I have never understood the reason for all the secrecy except that some players might take advantages of some sort if they knew about upcoming changes.

As I've said before, and probably will say again ("a hundred times" even, maybe.)
Most people protest the implementation of pretty much anything. It was a real pain in the arse whenever we get something new.
But over time it gets tweaked, and we realise Cantr is much better off with the changes.
Did you know that you never used to be able to hit people! :|
And most people protested violence's implementation. Where would Cantr be then?
