Huh. I was wondering why it felt like a town of NPCs to me. Makes sense now.

It's slightly ridiculous this has gone on for more than a page now but whatevs, never seen an internet debate I wouldn't happily wade into and do the backstroke in.

I mostly agree with Axiom's post. It's a game, I play it primarily to have fun, but where we differ is that it actually is really immersive for me, and so much so that a silly town/char/building/vehicle/whatever name isn't going to change that in the slightest. I'm not my character, so whether I'm sitting there cracking up or just rolling my eyes it's not going to seriously effect them.

I once heard of a place called Fertileland in game, so if you think that I'm not going to one day settle a place and call it "This Land" the first chance I get, you're out of your mind.
If someone gets the reference, it's more of a thing where the player can point at their screen and be like Oh Man! and laugh. If not, it won't change the experience for player OR character, I think though.

I think a lot of people forget this. Often. Either that or they aren't willing to accept any other play-style but their own opinion.

Sometimes I'm not sure everyone is capable of conceiving this as a real possibility. It seems to be most often treated more like one of those things you hear about but raarely take seriously, like nutritional information when you're already healthy enough to not feel the need to make those kinds of changes.

It feels worth saying again, Cantr is as many different games as there are players of it. It feels like finding someone trolling when you find someone playing a totally different game than you but using the same toys on the same field, but it's really just that they're innocently playing a different game with the same toys on the same field [/intentional redundancy]. Probably most of the things in this whole thread come back to this.

Right. I personally really don't like the whole relationships/sex part of this game, but I don't go around complaining about it either. (Well, not unless they're really obnoxious in public, anyway...) I think it's fine to live and let live unless someone is actively hampering your fun. I get weirded out when people hit on me and annoyed when couples are lovey-dovey where I can see them, but I also understand that some people want different things out of this game than I do, so I ignore it. I think the same principle should apply to the Texas thing. Maybe it's not to your taste, but if some people like it, does it really hurt you to overlook it?

Yeah, RPd sex actually squicks me, and I find it weird and uncomfortable, but not all of my characters are asexual, so I deal with it if it's somethng my char would do.
But please, if youre doing a sex scene, dont make it even more awkward by OOCing anything but the consent question.

Prometheus, you could always request the other player do a fade through the sex RP. As far as the chars are concerned the sex happened but it spares you from having to RP it all. Not everyone enjoys going through that in detail but want their chars to experience relationships. Some players might turn out to be lame jerks about it and find a reason to end the chars' relationships but I think the majority are willing to go along with it.

Re: Texas, I think there is an in-game etymology for this place name (a character of mine has been told that "it's like Taxes backwards, except Sexat sounded too racy, so we only inverted the vowels"), which I think makes it excusable.

I think they must have meant to say consonants, but that's still hilarious. :D And knowing more of the back story now 'Taxes' makes perfect sense IC.

...or just kill the character off because the sex was the only reason they were playing? Different games indeed.

That would be one way to end the relationship. ;) It's sad to see things go that route especially when a char is so amazingly RP'd in day-to-day situations that aren't intimate. It may annoy me at times but it really doesn't bother me if that is someone's sole reason for playing. There are some who take it to the extreme and other players can choose if they want to participate in that with them or OOCly decline if it goes beyond their comfort zone.
