It's frustrating to have OOC comments. Solo RP thingummies, I can respond to (and feel like some creepy stalker, watching that spoon fixing man like a hawk). OOC, well. Can't really respond to fairly, without dragging in OOC myself. Course, everyone uses OOC when they flub up, but there's the whisper thing, right there.

Anyway. On the annoying things scale, OOC sucks more then people just poking their head out, having their dude do something amusing, and going back to sleep. What gets my goat, is having a sleeper awaken, blurt out IC or OOC that they'll be up to more soon, and it never happens. Or they just believe the world is the same as when they did fall asleep, 3 decades ago.

Example. Something happens. Everyone awake, responds in their way. Year passes. Sleeper awakens, sees a note or evidence. "EVERYONE, RELAX. I'M AWAKE AND I'LL FIX THIS". Head, desk.

Bloody ingame necromancers.

No I mean abusing OOC messages for the purposes of whining and complaining and just being irritating and distracting to the point I can't take your character seriously anymore and just want to get mine away from them even if that's an OOC action itself.

Seems waaay more common than it used to be and even people who have clearly been playing long enough to know better (just judging by their character's age alone) will overdo it to a ridiculous level, and there's no way to respond to it IC.

Even things like (OOC: Sorry I've been asleep for so long but I'm still playing the game!) while well meaning and thus far less annoying than the other kind, still mean absolutely nothing to the characters who never saw you move or speak.

Again, abuse is never really a valid play style. I don't approve of OOC myself, unless in emergencies. If you make a weird typo that completely confuses the point you're trying to get across, I can understand a quick OOC to set things back on course. I can also understand limited OOC to correct a new player if they're doing something wrong... Though that should probably be used in a whisper. OOC complaining has no place in the game. People have, again, no real legitimate right to police the roleplay of other people. Using OOC to tell people you're going away (again, privately) might not be such a bad thing.

Randomly using OOC instead of an IC action to explain the same thing, though, isn't the way to go. I much prefer people roleplaying a long sleep than suddenly lurching back into action with a OOC: LOL I WAS AWAY NOW I AM BACK WHAT DID I MISS?

Yeah, depends on what it's for.

"OOC: How do I use this game mechanic?" sounds better than your character sounding more dumb than they're intended to be.
"OOC: Stupid phone, I meant 'this'." could, I suppose, be clarified with just "*clears throat* Sorry, I meant 'this'."
"OOC: I'm moving and I'm not sure when I'll get internet access again." sounds less ominous than "I'm going to sleep and I don't know when I will wake." (although these days it seems like every other person is playing from their phone anyway.)

On a related note, it bugs me when people emote things that I can't respond to, either, like implying someone's thoughts or even someone's name. If you get someone's name wrong and keep emoting about it, nobody can correct that and it's just going to wind up confusing. Likewise, if people are particularly lazy about introducing themselves, it can be very confusing who someone is emoting toward.

I give them a nickname, and never bother changing it. Yes, I'm in a town with Bear Hugger, Whiny, Other Whiny and Sleepers 1-8. Strangely, I don't think I'm going to need anything more accurate, with their insular playstyle.

Heh. I will admit to, on occasion, giving people names that do not bear repeating on forums like these.

Does anyone else ever use that section for keeping notes on a character for anything but really mean and nasty comments you wish your char could say to their face?

 True. I share one town with "boring newspawn" "another boring newspawn" and "yet another boring newspawn", who have no descs and have never spoken and I expect to be dead within the year if someone doesn't keep feeding them.

Seriously though, I make it a point to name everyone in a town even if it's just something like 'bushy beard' or 'wolf meat' or 'bad fisher'. And then a note about where I saw them so if I bump into them later my char can be like, 'Oh! I remember you from Townname but never caught your name!' if they so desire.

I seriously named a man Dead Man Walking, because he was one hit from dying. He came through the same town four times, I then saw him on his last tour. He sat there long enough for the animal attack tick to happen, and he died. I think this is on the wrong thread, but I couldn't stop laughing.I'm sorry whoever you were man!

Just for one last word on the other topic, people, please stop trying to effect people's actions IC with OOC remarks. If you're doing this you know who you are and that is bad and wrong and also kind of dumb because I mean obviously none of them can respond? What are you really expecting?

Based on some of the words being thrown around this thread, it makes me feel like we are singling out a few instances in a particular town that I might be in. This could certainly be seen as OOC bullying against a player, combined with some of the in character events going on as well, this makes for a very poor situation for both the player(s) and character(s) involved. Unless this is happening across the board in just about every town and I am just applying it to a few recent instances in one of my towns.

I can understand where both sides are coming from, yet I don't see any tactful way to discuss this either in character or publicly out of character now that these defensive brick walls are up.

If a specific player is disrupting gameplay with too many OOC posts or possibly trying to sway events with OOC posts it should be reported.

Lately more than one of my characters have had to put up with more OOC than I'm personally comfortable with. Not counting the times I was helping a newbie, of course--that's absolutely fine and I'm happy to do it. But it's only in one case that it's seemed especially manipulative, not to mention sort of mean spirited and uncomfortable in a situation that could and should have been handled IC...and honestly shouldn't have been a big deal anyway? I've seen less tears over characters literally being murdered, and this is stuff being blurted out loud in the middle of town. And that was pretty much the straw that got the camel's back...posting in the annoyance thread. Or however that goes.

No names are being named so I don't see why bringing an annoying thing to the annoyance thread should be any kind of problem for anybody. This is what the thread is here for. Or I should I have been having my character say all of this in game?

Actually, I mostly use that section for keeping track of positions, ranks, titles, etc., that a character has. Sometimes I'll note down where they spawned, or where they originally met my character, and include notable events. I don't do it for everyone, but I like to have a quick reference guide for interactions.
