In four days time I can tell you about the character who filled - absolutely to the top- an open silo with tools and weapons. 5 minutes later, a newspawn leaves because I'm being too repressive o.O . But only in four days time, can't talk about it till then.

Sounds like one for the Funny quotes thread. :P People should use that one more often.

I think sometimes people just create a character with the idea of them being a rebel throwing off the oppressive shackles of the MAN and so just aren't willing to let them deviate from that script even if they wind up in a place where it doesn't fit.

That's why I've given up making plans for a character before they spawn. The game never, ever puts you anywhere that works for what you had in mind.

I always find it odd that those characters that allow things to stagnate also get praised for "keeping things running". When that happens I can't help but roll my eyes and think bitterly, "oh so you play the leader's new girlfriend".

Agreed that most of them don't deserve any medals, but sometimes you have to take what you can get. Sometimes a person that wakes up once every other day to lend you a tool or pay you for your work is the most consistently helpful person in town and the only one making it possible to someday have the means of escape.

This has been my experience as well! I do have another character idea to make, but I don't expect the spawn location gods to be cooperative, and I'm not really interested in any other sort at the moment... Maybe one day I'll see how it goes.

BHW is the worst lol. Everyone gets a free vehicle and they leave permanently immediately. Most frustrating town ever.

Newspawns are important no matter where their loyalties lie.
You never know, one day they might be someone you'll wish you'd treated well! Tsk tsk.

I've seen this happen more than once and it falls under the 'puzzling' category for me because in that situation my natural reaction would be to celebrate having someone I can rope into a couple years dedicated work in exchange for whatever vehicle and equipment they need. The more stuff you convince them they need the longer you can keep them, and at the end of it you've got someone whose indebted to you and a potential trader too...

This strategy has worked out very well for my town leader char. Most of these industrious newspawns don't actually survive long enough to make their purchase, but they usually get most of the way there.

And then you sometimes get those pesky newspawns whom want everything crystal clear and in print so there is sense of obligation left over after the job is done. :P

I agree with you both though. Newspawns are an asset. Even if they die, they still did work for you for -free- at that point as morbid as that sounds. If they live, hopefully they're a more than just useful addition to the economy as well.

You blighters. This explains so many things. No no, the leader who was setting out clearly, how long it'd take for things, and all the things I could be buying, wasn't doing it for my benefit, but in the hopes I'd DIE. Well, I showed them! I showed them good!

and got recruited as unpaid staff. Shaddup!

Anyway, the whole point of having people working, is to make a profit, even a small one, from their work, and be able to sell worked goods for bigger profit to traders, or for whatever purpose they are being built for. So, more hands, more work done, and more profits in all ways. Capitalism 101, with a smidge of genuine selflessness in helping someone with nothing, become a someone. With pants.

I do have to admit, I may just have a little celebratory dance for when a new spawn starts on a nice long project, and falls asleep forever. And feel a little bad that I did the dance. But hey, offered the chance for vehicles and all the useful items we had, so can't feel overly awful about the pre-dug hole they'll fall into.

When you openly state on a newspawn character after some thought that one day you're going to leave and travel from the town, and you consequently get ignored

Haven't had much experience with that. Most of the times when I've opened my mouth about plans, had nothing but support and advice. Not much in actual resources that I didn't work for, but that wasn't expected. Guess it depends on the people around, as always.

I hope you guys realize that being expected to work for years for a tandem when there are 20 abandoned motorcycles in the town gathering dust is why almost all of my characters are thieves or troublemakers.

Speaking of reactions when leaving your spawn town, I find it very annoying when I spawn somewhere I don't like and want to leave, and people get offended. As if my spawning there means they own me.

Nothing wrong with expecting a token amount of commitment and helpfulness from a person before just handing them the keys to whatever. I mean, sure, if I had 20 bikes I could just leave them open with the keys inside and let every newspawn drive off without a word of thanks, but I'd much rather make a nice gift of it to a friendly person. Haven't encountered anyone expecting literal years of work for a basic bike in a very long time, though I guess it wouldn't surprise me to hear these kind of people still exist.

This is something I've encountered, yes, and it does annoy me. But at the same time I can see the other point of view, it's frustrating where you do everything you can to set newspawns up with good tools and opportunities and they just walk off almost immediately. Again, a small amount of politeness and at least a token attempt at giving a community a chance goes a long way.

... and my characters who were given free tandems were the ones who actually happily went back to their spawn towns.

"Here's the key-- oh wait I don't have a key... gee we will have to break it open then. You'll still need to work twenty days lol. Yeah idk whose bike this is, it's been here since my predecessor's predecessor ruled this region... aye, it's a piece of history is what you're paying for."

Man you guys just need to spawn in the town I'm running, instead of these lame sleepers and walkers we keep getting. My char really really just wants everybody to be wealthy and contributing. :(
