Thanks to Cantr, I have...

Postby Otherside » Sun Jul 27, 2014 8:31 pm

Just wondered what else everyone had gained or lost OOC due to this little social experiment! I also thought it might be nice feedback for Jos etc, so dig deep...

Thanks to Cantr, I have...

Learnt some Polish, Spanish and other languages.
Ran over two big deadlines... but managed to make it. Just.
Lost a few nights sleep.
Met a kindred spirit.
Stayed up way too late, way too many times.
Found lots of new music.
Discovered Gaiman.

...become emotionally compromised due to a breakup between my character and her beloved (he was suicidal and this was before the hacker). Like, I cried then almost as much as I cried when I broke up with my RL boyfriend.
Which is yet another reason I shy away from romantic relationships iRL.
...woken up at 3am without an alarm to roleplay my character as soon as she arrived in town.
...learned to write really cool emotes with which I couldn't have gotten away in any other roleplay. :P

-I've become emotionally attached to my phone.
-Lose way to much sleep.
-Have more fantasies in my head between two characters then with RL people.
There's probably more but that's all I can think of right now while trying to actually play the game at the same time.
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

...decided to post in this thread.

Also, caused everybody in my family to consider seriously that I am addicted to my computer, been inspired to start writing again, gotten very existential several times over the meaning of personhood, gotten existential many times about the importance a single person to history as opposed to within their own view, taken much longer than to watch S1 of Elementary than I should have, and run my computer battery into the ground far too many times.
E: and oh yes, spent innumerable hours agonizing over perfecting suggestions that keep getting shot down. :'(

1) I woke up in every project hour.
2) I have met some wonderful people.
3) I fought with my bf for I was playing Cantr in the middle of a conversation.
4) I improved my English, I have learned some words in few other languages.
5) I felt deeply sad , very happy...
6) I have been able to use my social experiences for RL
7) I have learned emoting better.
8) I have witnessed many great stories and tragedies.
I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

- Improved my English.
- Met a lot of new people, some of them simply amazing.
- Some of those people made me face my life and my relationship. And see how wrong it was. Instead of reparing it, it lead to the end of it, but... well...
- My new freedom made me decide to go as au pair. Other players like Henkie, Freiana and later Bmot made me consider the Netherlands as one of the posibles countries to go. Where I'm living now. With a new relationship. And a new exciting life (that it's, sadly, making me leave aside cantr more and more... :? )
- Cantr made me "stronger" too. Some of my chars are. And if they can "do it", why can't I?

- And yeah, cantr made me laugh. And love. And cry. And angry as hell. It made me see how awesome people can be. And how mean and careless too. It, somehow made me live out of my boring life, and kept me sane into my insanity.

At the time, I unsubbed. However, it will never really be resolved. After talking with a lot of folks, I've found that people either get this or they don't. If they don't get it, they'll never understand why it's fun. My spouse doesn't get it. She tries to humor my hobby, but sometimes, things just blow up. I've used analogy to the best of my ability to try to explain what I do here and why it entertains me. Might have bought me another 5 years until the next blow up.

If I ever unsub, it will be because of my significant other. I know myself that while I was over in the UK with him, I was a bit rude, becoming too distracted and caught up in the Green World. And being away from him again, I realize how stupid I was. It's no small feat, struggling to cross the entire world (you try getting visa's after you graduate, no employment, and it costs shit tons of money), leaving your life behind, and then getting there and wasting time on a game. As much as I love Cantr, my loved ones should come first. Balance is important, and I don't want to lose people over this, like those sad people that played WoW until they realized they've lost everything.

So, because of Cantr, I've...
Neglected someone I shouldn't have.
Stayed up way too late.
Become emotionally attached to some of my characters.
Developed my beloved main character, gave her a significant amount of depth.
Stopped writing... :C too caught up in the game.
Spent a lot of time ranting to people about in game events.
Met some great people.
Got me into other text based roleplaying games. (but god forbid I become as addicted with it as this...)

So, please don't be offended if I start killing off characters, it's the final solution. I will be going to college in September and will only be able to focus on select characters. That and I don't want to ruin something we struggled so hard for. You really don't want it to be a case of "You don't know what you've got till it's gone...", and that goes for everyone. Breaking up over a internet game is stupid, and unlikely, but if you sit and play it when you should be focusing on them, it's bound to be annoying and hurtful. At the end of the day, it's not that they don't like your hobby, it's because they don't like how consumed you are by it.
