Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
freedom fries = french fries
The way I see it, 0-1 is morning, 2-3 is afternoon, 4-5 are sunset and evening, and 6-7 are night. The last ten IG minutes of 7 are the sunrise and have fog and haze and whatnot. But I rarely actually roleplay it; that's just how I imagine it. There have been times where my characters were nothing but "night owls" and other times where they've had a "normal sleep schedule".

Freedom fries is an outdated term from the states used to promote patriotism during WWII, I believe. So they're the same as French fries. Of course, the French fries in Cantr aren't even deep fried... So, sounds like you have a very confused American, there.

EchoMan wrote:Currently there is no day or night in Cantr. Some people role-play it, but it becomes very annoying for people from other time-zones. Weather will eventually be introduced in Cantr, and it will rotate over a new sort of periodic cycle, which could be broken down into seasons, days and nights, but we will see about that.
I hate to bump a really old thread but this came to my mind before and I wanted to see if there was any answer to it. I see there wasn't a definitive answer, so my question now is would it be okay to suggest it or do you think it's a bit too early to suggest it at this time with weather not even being implemented yet?

I'd actually made a system waaay back when the game was in its first stages involving day and night. But it was more in the form of a calendar in which the Cantr world also had a sun and a moon. 0 hour was midnight on the western hemisphere and 4 hour on the eastern hemisphere. As the character was on Treefeather at the time, he split the island where the eastern half of the island was part of the eastern hemisphere and the western side was...the western hemisphere. But that was before he knew there was more to the world than just Treefeather and Cantr islands.

That's neat, no doubt, but I don't think that solves the problem for me. In my opinion the problem has to be solved with a universal system and the reason is because this particular thing conflicts if anyone disagrees. If your character believes it's day and another believes it's night then it's going to make the RP suffer, however, the other character could just be crazy but how do you know without knowing what time a day it really is?
Anyway, before I get anymore off topic, I think your idea is amazing but if we could find a way to expand that and make it more universal in Cantr rather than personal, in my opinion, that would be the ideal method. I know it's not a huge problem but until it's addressed in some form it causes me to just give up role playing a day and night cycle just because of the conflicts in the role play. But from my understanding it will be addressed later I just wanted clarification to that or advise on whether I should wait to make a suggestion on the day and night cycle until the weather is put in.

Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
I don't rp it this way but I've thought about this a bit and this is basically for amusement only (probably just my amusement)
A major issue for night time is that no matter what time it is, things at a distance are always visible. This leads me to believe that the Cantrian world is actually part of a binary star system in which the Cantrian world and a secondary star are both gravity locked in synchronized orbits around a primary star. This keeps constant daylight on the world where half the planet is constantly facing one of the stars. This also helps to explain the weird physiological actions of Cantrians and their narcolepsy, having the ability to be awake for days at a time or falling asleep instantly without notice. It can also explain the lack of weather. If there are limited temperature changes due to the constant light then there would be very little air mass movement. Likewise the lack of tides and ocean currents where a ship can stop moving on the ocean and stay in the same spot.

Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
The scenery looks the same no matter what time one views it. There is no evidence of nightfall or discernible seasons. Cantrians can work around the clock for years and never get tired, which tells us that Cantrians do not require sleep and lack a form of circadian rhythm. All of these observations suggest that the planet does not rotate, but is rather just a stationary, doughnut-shaped torus surrounded by a homogeneously luminescent atmosphere.

Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
*he nods* I have no idea what any of you just said but I still think night time would be a plus for role playing. Lol
I seriously wasn't expecting to have a discussion about the stars and umm binary w/e you said, I was just curious if anyone else would want a day and night cycle and if they did then should I suggest it before or after the weather system is implemented. lol
Since it was brought up, the seeing things at a distance thing is just another neat little feature that can be added. I've considered if night was added (assuming it was) and assuming that it impairs vision we can have our characters carrying torches, flashlights depending on how advanced the civilizations are.
It would be a nice touch to be able to walk into a town at night and see a dark place being lit up by torches and in my opinion that would give the area a very distinct and unique feel. As opposed of course to a place that's lit up by light bulbs of some sort, but the prospect of it being night and walking down a road only to see a glimmer of a light in the distance from a torch.
That being said, it's only if the assumptions played out the way it did. Otherwise what the day and night cycle would serve to do is give the players the ability to role play that scenario. I guess the point reviving this thread was to get some input on whether or not people agree and if you'd support an idea like this being implemented sometime in the future, I'm just trying to figure out if I should bother suggesting it right now or at all and I feel the best way to do that is the get the opinions of people whether or not they'd vote for it.
Sorry if my question was answered in the previous posts but I really don't think I understood what anyone was saying... Lol
Edit: Someone also mentions Cantrians never get tired, well I always envision mine not persistently working and in my mind that's why everything takes so long. Whether it's building a machine, weapon, or traveling because they aren't consistently doing it. I just imagine them taking a break to rest and when they're walking I envision them stopping to camp. So in my mind they aren't always consistently working and that's just my opinion but I think that's what this game was shooting for.

Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
If and when the powers that be implement 'weather', the maps that are in existence will probably change to reflect a north and south pole with a equilateral line somewhere between the two. Or so I would think. To further add to the weather patterns, such as tropical, arid, semi arid, temperate...etc. All which points to the Cantr world being designed as a globe.
It will be interesting to see what weather patterns go where. Where will it snow? Where will the monsoons be? Where will the hurricanes develop and dissipate? Average rainfall? Lets not forget temperatures! Oh the possibilities?!
So if that happens...the possibility of us Cantrians designing our world to reflect Cantr as being 'globe' shaped, then that is where time will become more of a factor as there will be some sort of standard or even a set point...such as a 'greenwich' point of reference. If that happens...then it will be much more easier to figure out how, or where, day time and night time comes into play.
Anyway, this is how I envision what will happen. Then again...

Cantr isn't a sphere. It's a torus (doughnut). So good luck, Silly.

It is?! How do you know that? Or should I ask...is this a fact or did someone just make it up?

Re: What time is night time in Cantr?
I'm not the right person to explain it. But it has to do with the fact that all the Cantr maps are square and aren't distorted at the edges and the way sextants work.
