Playing emo...

Postby SekoETC » Wed Aug 18, 2004 8:14 pm

I have the bad habit of falling too deeply in game with some of my characters, mostly Dove but now also Hannah and Maline. It's worst now with the hormonal changes, at the moment I'm holding back tears because... ok I can't risk the 4d anymore though this is nothing important. Older things: When Dove was taken into McGregors I was so happy I ran, and I almost never do that... A moment before I was crying because Dove saw Altimus's corpse... And then the poem incident in Seatown Lakeside, I have never cried like that before. Am I a freak or does this happen to someone else too?

I do feel emotions for what some of my characters go through, but only in my mind, I don't actually cry or anything. I feel sad or happy or whatever, but not too much.

Mavs is in denial.

I cuss aloud when something shitty happens to one of my chars. I exuberantly cheer with a decisive but drawn out "YES!" for effect when I am victorious in some matter be it large enough.

And we know you cry, too, Nitefyre. Come on, be a man and admit it. :P

You are not a freak Seko. Or I am too. :P
I have cried, I have cursed. I've lost sleep, paced at work, cried at a concert even, when one of the songs reminded me of the girl that broke up one of my guys the day before. I sit here, depressed when one of my charrie's is. Actually, I sit here with the expression on my face that my char would have, thus getting into the char's mind better, thus depressing myself.
Okay, I'm a freak. I admit it.

I'm very emotional with my chars. I laugh, I cry, I cheer, I'm happy, I'm sad, I stay up all night waiting for events that have been dropped on the ground showing a certain date and time.

I even wanted to kill one of my chars. and start over because a mistake I made. My husband thinks I'm to involved. He hates Cantr because it takes alot of my time. Even when I'm not playing on the computer I still have a pencil and paper jotting down usefull information for a particular char. That takes alot of time sometimes because even if one of my chars. know something I still wait untill the other char. finds out about it and write the same thing all over again for that char. so I don't get accused of CR breaching. Any way I'm rambling but yeah.........

I can feel frustrated when I lost a character I like, but I never get very emotionally involved with them.
Wow...this looks really boring now when almost everyone seems to be totally dedicated to theirs :)

You aren't alone. I'm a bit attached to my characters, but Cantr experiences have never traumatized me. I just didn't want to post if only really involved people were here...

I usually keep my characters and myself strictly divided. Yeah, I might feel bad for a character or happy but it doesn't affect me personally.

Cheer up, weepy. Some people cry at movies, some people cry reading books, some people cry at weddings, some people cry when their children leave for college, some people cry when they are people, some people cry just because, etc... You just happen to cry when role playing your characters which goes to show how deeply you love to role play. What is wrong with that? Absolutely nothing. If someone claims they don't cry then they care about nothing and I have yet to meet anyone that cares for nothing.

I know I have not yet cried directly due to cantr, but I do admit I would cry if certain characters did die, and the list is too long to write down. The ones I was close to tearing up for was: Maily Yumm, Collin Munk, William Bishoff and the closest, Sulee Maronia. (and thats just for my emotionally shooken KDS char) I was in quite a fit for a few days after Daniel's death by the hand of an acquaintance in SFN.

Currently reading the end third of Catch 22, (joseph heller) and the loss of some well built up characters definetly has me... :( . Killing Fields (based on the true story of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge) and definetly All Quiet on the Western Front [the classic book] had my eyes wet.

I am just like the rest of you nuts. I have had times I haved cried and laughed , shouted in anger, all the above for my charrs. I feel that if you cant feel anything for them then you are playing the wrong game
I am the Dragon Slayer. And as long as I have my friends behind me. I will never fall.

There is a quite large range from feeling nothing to crying if you lose a character. There is really not a right or wrong way to play an RPG, as long as you RP good.
I think I'm able to play the horror of a dying character better than many who may be more emotional over the actual loss...

And RPG always deal with death and losses, so from my point of view I can find a "good" death for a character as an interesting experience, even if I like RPing them.

I, for example, had a woman in a quite high position in the Lad Empire, who felt betrayed by the government and decided to desert. On the way she was attacked by people and wild animals, and when she finally reached the hills outside the Lad boundries I RPed her stumbling into a building, her clothes torn and he body scarred from violence, and she openly praised her rescuers when she saw three men inside the building.

In return they laughed at her, saying that she had just met her doom...and before she died we had some good RP exchange.

That's an experience I look back on as "succesful" although I lost a character I liked.

I'd rather lose a 20-year old character in good rp than live to be sixty with nothing happening. I guess most people agree to that.

I've found myself stressing about what to do in a certain situation for the entire drive home until I could get back on...

It's really addictive!
